Penn State Player Quotes - Postgame vs. UCLA 10/5/24

Drew Allar | QB | Jr.

Q: The way you and Liam connected today. What would you name that to?

A: I think it's just him being in the right place at the right time, because his first two catches down the seam, he was really the second progression. He did a great job of getting behind the Tampa two guys and making tough, contested catches. That second catch was a big time catch, just because the linebacker knew it was coming and reacted to it pretty fast. Liam did a great job with just controlling the ball and getting down. Then his last catch, we work on that throughout the summer and fall camp. To be able to go out and execute it was great for us and he did a great job on that. First 100 yard game for him in his career. It's super fun to see because again, like I know I said a couple of weeks ago, he's super consistent in his preparation and how he goes about his business, so he does all the right things, and it's good to see him get the reward for that.

Q: You’re going to be going on the road for first time in six weeks. Knowing that, how would you describe the confidence level of the team? How comfortable you are with one another given that you've been home for the last four, five weeks?

A: I think for us, we take pride in just showing up every Saturday, no matter who it is, no matter where it's at. Tomorrow, we flush this game and move on to the next opponent. It's about our process throughout the week and what we do well from this game, building on that, and fixing what we didn't do well this game. Obviously, it's a great advantage to play at home, but the schedule says we go on the road, then we go on the road. We're not going to make a big deal about it. It's just what's on the schedule for us and it's just taking that mentality.

Liam Clifford | WR | RS Jr.

Q: What kind of spark does it give you personally when you haul in that third down catch, the 26-yarder?

A: Yeah, obviously, it gives us a huge spark. Any time we complete a third down it helps the offense out a ton. Our room talks about that a lot. Just being able to, especially on third down, the money down, picking up the third down and moving the chains allows us to continue getting the ball in our hands is big.

Q: How do you look at how the first five weeks prepared you guys for next weekend?

A:  Each week's been a good opponent. We continue to get good looks from each team, but we’re going to enjoy this win.

Jalen Kimber | CB | RS Sr.

Q: The starting defense gives up only three points against UCLA today. You guys have been pretty dominant throughout the course of the year. What's gone into that and how would you evaluate your play?

A: Just coming out, starting out fast. Especially coming out of halftime, you can't come out slow. This is something that we harped on so coming out starting fast, being dominant especially on third down trying to get off the field is something that we talked about.

Q: You guys allowed nine yards in the third quarter. What changed from the first half to the second half?

A: The game plan. Coming out, switching things up is something that we talked about during halftime and also just starting fast. We can’t come out starting slow in the second half. Just starting fast and being dominant.

Zakee Wheatley | S | R-JR

Q: Take me through the fourth-down stop.

A: We are just playing ball. Using my instincts and my football IQ and shooting the hole when I see it on any down.

Q: How has the team been more physical this year than it has in past years?

A: I think the standards have all been set, even last year and the year before that. Our coaches do a great job of telling us how to come in to every game. A 0-0 mindset, it doesn’t matter who we play, we get the job done. We play relentless.

Olaivavega Ioane | OL | R-SO

Q: Where do you feel like you’ve improved the most personally from last season to this season?

A: I would say my confidence every time I go in, I don’t let the guys around me down. I know going out there I have their back and I let them know I am going to have their backs.

Tyler Warren | TE | SR

Q: A bunch of different wide receivers have caught the ball this season. After seeing all the hard work they've done this summer, how good is it for you and the entire offense?

A: Its been a great thing to have a bunch of guys playing like that. For Liam today to go for over 100 yards and its been three or four other receivers that have gone over 100, I am happy for them. They work as hard as anybody and they are getting the credit they deserve.

Q: Where would you rank yourself among tight end greats at Penn State

A: Being able to plau tight end at Penn State is something that means a lot to me. With all of the guys that have played before me and the kind of talent that I have played with here, it’s a really special place.

Tony Rojas | LB | SO

Q: Coach Franklin just talked about it, 86 yards given up in the third quarter all season long. What happens out of the locker room for this defense?

A: It's been ever since last season, since we kind of just came out after half time with the mentality they are not going to score on us coming out of half time. We just have the mindset, really we're going to stop moving down, and our confidence is high right now.

Q: We talked a little bit about the adjustments that you're able to make now with technology, but also the iPads. How much are you using those new times to kind of see a little bit differently? Does that help at all?

A: Yeah, I'd say. At halftime, the coaches used to use the iPad and tell us the adjustments after, but during the game, more on the bench, on the sideline, it helps a lot. Especially coach [Dan] Connor. He's been a big help, seeing each play through each series, and then tells us how to do better.

Kaytron Allen | RB | JR

Q: Kaytron, when you're taking on tackles, what goes through on your mind, you just seem to be very ferocious, what’s going through your mind as you approach your attacker?

A: To not get down. That's what I want to do. My mentality, nobody is going to get me down. You have to defend me, scratch, crawl, anything to get me down.

Q: So, passing game against West Virginia, you had a touchdown. You haven't really been targeted much since then. You had another target today. What can you do to be more involved in the passing game to help the Nittany Lions?

A: I mean, just out there, just having fun whenever I get the opportunity. And what we do as a team, it's not just about me, it's about the team

Q: What is your favorite thing to watch for when you watch your teammates?
A: Everybody out there excited. After they make a play, everybody congratulating each other. We have the best defense in the country. It is a blessing to have them and I know they always have our back, and we always have their backs.

Harrison Wallace | WR | R-JR

Q: Coach Franklin spoke about this a bit earlier. Obviously, you've been able to get open, and then that's causing stress on the defense. Today, Liam was able to go off for 100 yards. How are you liking the way the offense looks with just how many people can hurt defense?

A:  I love it. Just giving all our guys a chance to go out there and make plays show the world what everyone in our program knows that we can do. I'm happy for Liam, this is one of the biggest games that he's had. Just super proud of him.

Q: Where were you when Venga made that hit? What was your reaction?

A: It was crazy. But, I mean, we rep it in practice a lot. So, we started that in the spring, and then we're repping at fall camp. So, I mean, it's not the first time we've seen it.

Q: To not have an explosive player like Nick in the lineup, how does that impact the offense in terms of balance?

A: I think the guys we have in the program, if one of our players isn't playing it, trust me, there is another guy behind them that can step up and be as explosive as he will. So Quinton came in there, didn't miss a beat. We had Kaytron and just really just kept moving.
