Special Teams Key in No. 12 Women's Hockey's 4-2 Victory Over No. 9 UConn

The Nittany Lions went 3-5 on the power-play as they recorded their first power-play goals of the season.

STORRS, Conn. - Special teams were the key in the No. 12 Penn State women's ice hockey team's 4-2 victory over No. 9 UConn on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • After a scoreless first period, UConn would score the opening goal just 53 seconds into the second period off a power-play goal by Christina Walker with assists by Megan Woodworth and Ava Rinker to put the Huskies ahead 1-0.
  • Then while UConn was on the power-play, Tessa Janecke broke away to score a short-handed goal with 17:43 remaining in the second period to even the score at 1-1.
  • With 7:30 left in the period, Maddy Christian would fire the Nittany Lions first power-play goal of the season off a feed by Lyndie Lobdell to give the Nittany Lions a 2-1 lead.
  • The Nittany Lions closed the second period with another power-play goal by Katelyn Roberts with 2:33 remaining in the frame off assists by Maddy Christian and Kendall Butze to take a commanding 3-1 lead heading into the final period.
  • UConn opened the third period with a power-play goal from Meghane Fuchesne-Chalifoux off assists by Rinker and Christina Walker to narrow the Penn State lead to 3-2.
  • The Penn State defense held on throughout the rest of the frame as Lyndie Lobdell closed out the victory with an empty-net goal off a feed by Janecke to secure the 4-2 victory.

GOALTENDERS

  • Goalie Katie DeSa tallied 27 saves on 29 shots attempted to improve her record to 2-2 on the season.

  • Penn State picked up their first power-play goals of the season going 3-5 on the man-advantage.
  • The Nittany Lions tallied their first win over UConn in program history.
  • Tessa Janecke picked up her sixth career short-handed goal.
  • Maddy Christian secured her second goal of the season.
  • Head coach Jeff Kampersal picked up his 448th career victory.
  • Penn State evens out to 2-2-0 on the season while UConn drops to 2-2-0 on the season.
