UNIVERSITY PARK, PA – Penn State Men’s Rugby closed out their home season on a high note with a gritty 19-12 victory over Davenport University on November 9th. The Nittany Lions delivered a strong performance, bouncing back impressively from their previous outing to secure the win against the Midwest Rugby Conference opponent.
Penn State came out with intent, showcasing early attacking flair. Wing Austin Noelle opened the scoring with a well-finished try down the sideline. Hooker Adam Bilbo followed up with a powerful effort off a pick & go to score, giving the Nittany Lions a solid lead heading into halftime.
The second half saw Fullback Jake O'Donnell add to Penn State’s tally with a decisive finish in open play. Scrumhalf Lorenzo Zamel was accurate off the tee, converting two of Penn State’s three tries. Davenport kept the game competitive, scoring two tries of their own, but Penn State’s defensive organization and work rate ensured the visitors were kept at bay in the closing stages.
Head coach Zac Mizell praised his team’s performance, stating, “It was a much-improved performance from the Walsh game. We’re proud to finish strong at home against a tough out-of-conference opponent.”
Looking ahead, Mizell expressed excitement for the upcoming Spartan Regiment bowl game, against another Midwest Rugby Conference opponent, on December 8th in Spartanburg, SC. This victory gives Penn State momentum and confidence as they prepare for the postseason challenge against Arkansas State.
