UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- Penn State women's basketball earns a spot in the 2024 Women's Basketball Invitation Tournament as a number one seed. The Lady Lions will host George Mason on Thursday, March 21 in the Bryce Jordan Center in PSU's first Invitation Tournament appearance since the 2017-18 season. In the inaugural year of the WBIT, the Lady Lions are one of four top seeds and will face the unseeded Patriots.
After a successful regular season with the best record since 2016-17 season, Penn State was one of the first teams out of the NCAA Tournament but take on the WBIT as a top seed. The Lady Lions have appeared in three Invitation Tournaments prior to the selection this season. They most recently competed in the 2017-18 WNIT where they dropped a first round game to Radford in overtime. Penn State's most notable WNIT run came in 1988 when the Lady Lions were crowned Champions after defeating Villanova, St. Joseph's, Indiana and then finally defeating Baylor in Waco, Texas.
The Lady Lions have faced George Mason just three times in program history. The most recent meeting between the Lady Lions and the Patriots came in 2019 when George Mason defeated Penn State in Happy Valley. The Lady Lions earned the first two victories in the series. George Mason finished its regular season at 23-6 with a loss in the Atlantic 10 Tournament to Duquesne.
The first, second and quarterfinal rounds of the inaugural WBIT will be hosted at campus sites with the semifinals and finals taking place in historic Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind. The preliminary rounds of the postseason tournament will be streamed on ESPN+.
