COLLEGE PARK, Md. – No. 24 Penn State women's lacrosse upset No. 4 Maryland, 12-11, in their final regular season road game in College Park, Md. Saturday afternoon.
The Nittany Lions collect their third ranked upset this season after today's win. The team defeated then-No. 22 Rutgers and No. 1 Northwestern earlier in the season.
Penn State improves to 8-6 (3-2 Big Ten) and Maryland moves to 11-4 overall and 4-2 in the Big Ten.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter – Penn State 3, Maryland 6
Maryland got scoring quickly started less than one minute into the matchup. Gretchen Gilmore responded with a goal of her own at the 12:43 mark.
The Terrapins then went on five goal streak before Gilmore scored her second goal of the game. Kristin O'Neill ended the first quarter with a free position goal to cut Maryland's lead to three.
Second Quarter – Penn State 3, Maryland 7
Both teams went without a goal for nearly nine minutes before Maryland restored their four-goal lead.
Third Quarter – Penn State 9, Maryland 8
Penn State scored four straight free position goals by Kayla Abernathy, Lauren Saltz, Gilmore and O'Neill.
O'Neill scored her third goal of the game to tie it up, 8-8. Meghan Murray then gives the Nittany Lions their first lead of the game at the end of the quarter.
Fourth Quarter – Penn State 12, Maryland 11
Murray added to Penn State's four goal scoring streak at the 10:41 mark. Maryland responded with two goals of their own to tie it back up.
Saltz went up the middle and launched one into the back of the cage to give the Nittany Lions the lead once again. Brooke Hoss also got to the cage to solidify Penn State's victory.
GAME NOTES

>> The defense scooped up 12 ground balls and caused six turnovers.
