COLLEGE PARK, Md. – No. 15 Penn State women's lacrosse lost to No. 19 James Madison, 14-13, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament hosted by Maryland in College Park, Md. Friday afternoon.
Penn State falls to 11-8 (4-2 Big Ten) and James Madison improves to 14-7 (5-1). The Dukes will play No. 4 Maryland in the second round Sunday, May 12.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Quarter 1 – Penn State 2, James Madison 2
Gretchen Gilmore got scoring started in the game after Kelly MacKinney dished out an assist from behind the net. James Madison responded with a goal of their own before Gilmore scored for the second time in the first.
The Dukes tied the game up before the end of the first.
Quarter 2 – Penn State 6, James Madison 9
Penn State had three different goal scorers in the second quarter account for their four goals scored. Gilmore opened the second quarter with her third goal of the game, registering her sixth consecutive hat trick. James Madison scored a goal of their own, then MacKinney notched her 13th goal this season.
Lauren Saltz scored from Kayla Abernathy assist to make Penn State's goal total six. James Madison then went on a three-goal streak to end the half, Penn State 6, James Madison 9.
Quarter 3 – Penn State 10, James Madison 11
The Nittany Lions scored three consecutive goals to start the third quarter by Saltz, Abernathy and Gilmore. The Dukes scored twice before MacKinney ended the quarter with a goal.
Quarter 4 – Penn State 13, James Madison 14
Meghan Murray got to the back of the cage to start scoring in the fourth. Gilmore scored twice in the final quarter.
GAME NOTES
>> Gilmore led the offense with a career high seven goals. MacKinney followed behind with six points from two goals and four assists.
>> Gilmore ended the season as the Nittany Lions' top point scorer with 57.
>> The defense scooped up 11 ground balls and caused five turnovers.
>> Abernathy notched a career high 14 draws.
>> Goaltender Sydney Manning registered a career high 14 saves in the loss.
