No. 8 Women's Hockey Completes Series Sweep of Lindenwood With 4-0 Shutout Win

Tessa Janecke became the all-time career points leader among both the men’s and women’s hockey programs at Penn State

MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo.Tessa Janecke became the all-time career points leader among both the men’s and women’s hockey programs at Penn State as the No. 8 Penn State women’s ice hockey team (23-4-1, 14-0-0 AHA) shutout Lindenwood (3-21-0, 2-11-1 AHA) 4-0 on Saturday afternoon. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Penn State opened the scoring on a breakaway that started in the Nittany Lion defensive zone as Janecke skated into the Lindenwood offensive zone and pushed the puck past the Lindenwood goalie in front with 1:03 left in the first period to put Penn State ahead 1-0. 
  • The Nittany Lions continued their offensive push as Maddy Christian shot the puck away from the Lindenwood goaltender on the right side of the net into the goal to put Penn State ahead 2-0 with 14:47 left in the second period. 
  • Less than five minutes later, Grace Outwater broke away from the Lindenwood defenders in the neutral zone as she fired a goal from the top right circle while the team was short-handed to put Penn State ahead 3-0 with 9:56 left in the frame. 
  • With 5:01 left in the third period, McKenna Walsh stole the puck from a Lindenwood defender in the Lions offensive zone and broke away past the defenders and then fired a shot that went wide of the goaltender. Nicole Hall then scooped the puck and ripped a shot around the net for a goal to put Penn State ahead 4-0. 

GOALTENDERS

  • Junior goalie Katie DeSa tallied 20 saves on the day. Her record improves to 20-4-0 on the year. DeSa sits second in program history for most wins by a goalie in a single season. The Pawcatuck, Conn. native now has seven shutout wins this season, which is tied for second most in a single season in program history. 
  • Lindenwood goalie Catherine Hodgins tallied 23 saves on 26 shots attempted through two periods. Her record drops to 1-5-1 on the year. 
  • Anna LaRose came into the game for Lindenwood in the third period where she tallied 21 saves and allowed one goal. 

STATS AND NOTES

  • Penn State captured their 10th straight win of the season. 
  • With her goal and assist this afternoon, Janecke now becomes the career points leader in Penn State hockey history (men’s and women’s) with 142.
  • Outwater scored Penn State’s sixth short-handed goal of the year, which currently leads the nation among team short-handed goals. 
  • The Picton, Ontario native, has two short-handed goals this season.
  • Penn State has defeated Lindenwood 15 straight times since 2021. 
  • Walsh tallied her second multi-point game of her career with a pair of assists. 
  • The Nittany Lions are a perfect 8-0-0 in January.
  • Penn State is a perfect 14-0 in Atlantic Hockey America play, which is the only team in the country to hold a perfect record in conference play this season. 
  • 23 wins is the second highest amount of wins in a season the Nittany Lions have had in program history. 
  • Penn State leads the all-time series 36-10-6.
