Penn State’s four unanswered second-period goals overcame a two-goal deficit, securing their win

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.–The No. 12 Penn State women’s ice hockey team (16-4-1) defeated Bemidji State (3-16-1) 6-4, in the opening game of the East West Showcase on Friday afternoon. Penn State’s four unanswered second-period goals overcame a two-goal deficit, securing their win. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Morgan Smith received a feed from Kate Johnson in the slot and dragged the puck in front of the goalie. She then fired a goal on the power-play to give the Beavers a 1-0 lead, 6:34 into the first period.
  • With 5:57 left in the frame, Grace Tullock sent a pass to Grace Outwater and Outwater tapped the puck into the net from the slot to even the game at 1-1. 
  • In the last seconds of the period, Smith fed the puck to Isa Goettl from the top right circle and Goettle fired the Beavers’ second goal of the game from the bottom left circle to give Bemidji State a 2-1 lead.
  • With 14:12 remaining in the second period, Genevieve Hendrickson tapped the puck from the slot into an empty net to put the Beavers ahead 3-1. 
  • Abby Stonehouse dragged the puck from the other end of the ice and ripped a goal past the goalie from the slot to cut the Beavers’ lead to 2-1 with 9:28 left in the second period. 
  • Then with 5:24 left in the frame, Leah Stecker launched the puck from the top right slot off feeds by Stella Retrum and Katelyn Roberts to even the score at 3-3. 
  • With 14:20 left in the third period, Tessa Janecke ripped the puck from the top right circle past the goalie to give the Nittany Lions a 4-3 lead.
  • Then with 9:18 remaining, Outwater scored her second goal of the game by tipping the puck in the slot to give Penn State a 5-3 lead.
  • With 3:33 left in the period, Izy Fairchild scored a goal off a backhanded shot in the slot off a feed by Shely Sandberg to cut the Penn State lead to 5-4. 
  • In the closing seconds of the game, Alyssa Machado scored an empty-net goal from the bottom left circle to seal the 6-4 victory. 

GOALTENDERS

  • Junior goalie Katie DeSa tallied 23 saves on 27 shots attempted. Her record improves to 13-4-0 in the year. 
  • Bemidji State goalie Eva Filippova recorded 23 saves on 28 shots attempted. Her record drops to 0-4-0 in the year.

STATS AND NOTES

  • Outwater recorded her fourth multi-goal game of the season with two on the day. 
  • The last time Penn State scored six or more goals came on January 27, 2024, against Lindenwood. 
  • This marks the Nittany Lions’ third six-goal-or-more game this season. 
  • This is the 24th time in program history Penn State has tallied six or more goals.
  • Janecke’s career points total (133) now trails the all-time scoring record held by Natalie Heising (137) by four. 
  • Penn State outshot Bemidji State 29-27.
  • The Nittany Lions picked up their third straight win.
  • Penn State won the first game of the series between the Nittany Lions and Beavers.
  • Brianna Brooks tallied her 99th career point with an assist.
