MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The No. 12 Penn State women’s ice hockey team (17-4-1) defeated No. 3 Minnesota (15-5-1) 6-2, in the last game of the East West Showcase on Saturday afternoon. This is Penn State’s first win over Minnesota in program history.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Brianna Brooks sent a pass to Stella Retrum from the right wall and Retrum fired the puck from the slot into the net to put Penn State ahead 1-0, with 15:25 remaining in the first period.
- Nicole Hall sent a feed to Grace Outwater from the defensive zone and Outwater dragged the puck into the offensive left circle and scored the second goal of the game with 12:30 left in the frame.
- Abby Stonehouse received the puck off a deflection from a Minnesota defender and landed in Stonehouse’s stick in slot as she then ripped a goal to put Penn State ahead 3-0 with 10:48 left in the period.
- With 8:39 remaining in the period, Maddy Christian received the puck in the neutral zone and banked a goal from the bottom left circle to put Penn State ahead 4-0.
- Minnesota scored their first goal of the game with 13:44 left in the second frame as Sydney Morrow tipped the puck in front of the net on the power-play to narrow the Penn State lead to 4-1.
- Retrum found the back of the net for the second time as she pushed the puck into the net in front of the goalie after a pass by Katelyn Roberts from the end wall to put Penn State ahead 5-1 with 12:07 remaining in the second period.
- Morrow scored her second goal of the day as she fired the puck from the back slot to cut the Penn State lead to 5-2 with 17:13 left in the third period.
- Tessa Janecke sealed the win for the Nittany Lions as she found the back of the net on the power-play as a feed from Hall got to Janecke in the top right circle and she then potted the goal to secure the 6-2 victory with 10:25 left in the game.
GOALTENDERS
- Junior goalie Katie DeSa tallied 32 saves on 34 shots attempted. Her record improves to 14-4-0 on the year.
- Minnesota goalie Hanna Clark recorded 19 saves on 25 shots attempted. Her record drops to 11-4-1 on the year.
STATS AND NOTES
- Brooks becomes the sixth Nittany Lion in program history hit 100 career points with her assist.
- This is the first time in program history Penn State has defeated Minnesota.
- Minnesota previously led the all-time series 4-0-0.
- This is the fourth time this season the Nittany Lions have scored six or more goals.
- For the 25th time in program history, Penn State has tallied six or more goals.
- Janecke now has 135 points in her career, which is two back from the all-time points lead in Natalie Heising with 137.
- Tiffany Hill played in her 100th collegiate game.
- This is Penn State’s third win against a top 15 team this season as they defeated No. 9 UConn and No. 13 Northeastern earlier this year.
- The Nittany Lions picked up their fourth straight win.
- Retrum tallied her first multi-goal game of the year and third of her career.
- Outwater has scored a goal in five of the last eight games this season.
