MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – Karley Garcia captured her second three-point game of the season as the No. 8 Penn State women’s ice hockey team (25-4-1, 16-0-0 AHA) clinched the series sweep of Robert Morris (8-19-3, 2-12-2 AHA) with 5-2 victory on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Penn State opened the scoring with a goal by Abby Stonehouse as she scored from the right circle on the power-play to put Penn State ahead 1-0 with 9:46 left in the first period.
- With 16:34 remaining in the second period, Nicole Hall drove up ice and hurled in a goal from the slot to put Penn State ahead 2-0.
- Shortly after, Robert Morris responded with a goal by Janelle Evans as she tipped in the goal in front of the Penn State goalie to narrow the Penn State lead to 2-1 with 16:07 left in the quarter.
- While Penn State was on the power-play, Brianna Brooks tipped the puck into the net over the Robert Morris goalie to put Penn State ahead 3-1 with 10:49 remaining in the second period.
- Robert Morris closed the period with a power-play goal by Emma Goding from the point to narrow the Nittany Lions lead to 3-2 with 6:26 left in the quarter.
- While Penn State was short-handed, Tessa Janecke drove up the ice and shot the puck to the left side of the net and scored to put Penn State ahead 4-2 with 17:10 left in the third period.
- Leah Stecker capped off the win with a power-play goal from the blue line to secure the 5-2 victory with 12:11 remaining in the third period.
GOALTENDERS
- Junior goalie Katie DeSa tallied 10 saves on the day. Her record improves to 22-4-0 on the year. DeSa sits second in program history for most wins by a goalie in a single season.
- Lauren Barbro played some minutes in net for the Nittany Lions as she made seven saves on the day and allowed only one goal.
- Robert Morris goalie Lucy Phillips tallied 56 saves on 61 shots attempted. Her record drops to 1-11-1 on the year.
STATS AND NOTES
- Penn State captured their 12th straight win of the season.
- Garcia tallied her second three-point game of the year with three assists.
- Janecke recorded her second short-handed goal of the year, making the total six for the team this year.
- Stecker marked her fourth multi-point game of the year with a goal and an assist on the day.
- Penn State is a perfect 16-0 in Atlantic Hockey America play, which is the only team in the country to hold a perfect record in conference play this season.
- 25 wins is the second highest number of wins in a season the Nittany Lions have had in program history.
- Penn State out-shot the Colonials 61-19.
- The last time the Nittany Lions fired 60 shots on goal came on October 24, 2024 against Stonehill when Penn State put up 65 shots.
- Penn State tallied three power-play goals on the day which is the second time this season.
