UNIVESRITY PARK, Pa.; February 23, 2025 – The Penn State Nittany Lion fencing teams closed out their regular seasons at the Temple Open in Philadelphia, Pa., this afternoon. The men went 2-2 and the women went 1-3.
The men’s squad began the day in round one with a 19-8 win over Stevens Tech. Penn State shut out STU 9-0 in Saber and won epee 6-3 but fell in foil 5-4. While the men battled Stevens Tech, the women lost a 17-10 match-up with host Temple. Penn State lost in saber 6-3, foil 5-4 and epee 6-3.
Penn State had a bye in round two and faced Penn in round three. The men lost a 19-8 dual with the Quakers, falling 6-3 in saber and foil and 7-2 in epee. The women lost 17-10 to Penn, winning 5-4 in foil but falling in saber 6-3 and epee 7-2.
The Nittany Lions took on St. John’s in round four. The men lost a hard fought 14-13 battle. Penn State won in both foil and epee by 5-4 scores but lost 6-3 in saber, narrowly losing the dual. The women fell 19-8, winning 5-4 in foil but losing 8-1 in epee and 7-2 in saber.
Penn State closed out the day in round five against Johns Hopkins. The men downed JHU 17-0, winning saber 6-3, foil 6-3 and epee 5-4. The women picked up their win for the day, grabbing a 15-12 victory by winning saber 5-4 and foil 6-3, while dropping epee 5-4.
The Nittany Lions will now prepare for the Mid-Atlantic South Regionals on Saturday, March 8. Penn State will host the NCAA Fencing Championships on Thursday through Sunday, March 20-23, in Penn State’s Multi-Sport Building.
