Arsenii Sergeev Tabbed B1G First Star of the Week

Unbeaten in six-straight games, and 9-1-2 in its last 12, No. 15 Penn State landed a weekly award winner for the fifth-straight week as junior goaltender Arsenii Sergeev (Yaroslavl, Russia) was tabbed the B1G First Star of the Week as announced by the conference office on Tuesday morning.

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Unbeaten in six-straight games, and 9-1-2 in its last 12, No. 15 Penn State landed a weekly award winner for the fifth-straight week as junior goaltender Arsenii Sergeev (Yaroslavl, Russia) was tabbed the B1G First Star of the Week as announced by the conference office on Tuesday morning.

The Nittany Lions have now had seven weekly honorees since the New Year and 10 overall. Sergeev secures his third weekly accolade after also being named First Star on January 7 and February 11. He joins Simon Mack (Oct. 8 & Feb. 18), Reese Laubach (Jan. 28 & Feb. 11), and Aiden Fink (Nov. 26, Feb. 4) as multiple-time honorees while John Seifarth (Dec. 3) has been recognized once.

The 10 weekly awards are the most for the Nittany Lions since garnering 13 during the 2018-19 season while the three First Star nods for Sergeev are the most for a single Nittany Lion in a single-season all-time.

Sergeev was the key piece in helping Penn State secure 5-of-6 points against No. 1 Michigan State over the weekend stopping 78-of-82 shots he faced posting a .951 save percentage and a 1.92 goals-against average capturing a shootout win and regulation win.

The junior net-minder backstopped a penalty kill unit that went a perfect 6-for-6 in the series including a 4-for-4 mark with Sergeev making 10 saves in a 3-2 victory on Saturday. Sergeev also stopped 3-of-4 shootout attempts on Friday as Penn State earned the extra point winning the shootout 2-1.

Sergeev is 10-2-4 with a .925 save percentage since returning from injury to begin January and has the Nittany Lions on the cusp of an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The 10 wins lead the Big Ten and rank third in the nation over that span while his save percentage is the second-best in the Big Ten during this current stretch.

The Yaroslavl, Russia native is 14-6-4 this season with a .920 save percentage and a 2.50 goals-against average overall marking the sixth-most single-season victories in program history while his save percentage and GAA currently rank as the second and third best, respectively.

The Nittany Lions return home to Pegula Ice Arena to conclude the regular-season this weekend against No. 2 Minnesota on Friday and Saturday. Each game over the weekend will air nationally on the B1G Network with Friday serving as Penn State’s annual ‘Wear White’ game.
