HISTORY
- Maryland leads the all-time series 41-2. Both wins came under head coach Jeff Tambroni in 2024 and 2019.
- The series dates back to 1916 as the Terrapins are one of PSU’s longest storied rivals.
- There has only been one overtime game between the squads in 2016.
SCOUTING MARYLAND
- Maryland was one of just a few unbeaten teams until its most recent triple overtime loss to Michigan at home last Saturday.
- UMD owns ranked wins over no. 18 Richmond, no. 2 Syracuse, no. 5 Princeton and no. 1 Notre Dame.
- Eric Spanos leads the team in points while Daniel Kelly leads in goals.
- Bradeb Erksa and Logan McNaney were named to the Tewaaraton Watch List. Spanos was added to the midseason list.
- Spanos has garnered Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors on three occasions.
- McNaney leads the conference in saves and saves per game and ranks second in goals against average. He has the second-best save percentage in the country.
- Shea Keethler has the second-best faceoff win percentage in the B1G.
LAST TIME VS. UMD
- The Nittany Lions faced Maryland twice last season with UMD coming away with the regular season victory and PSU defeating Maryland 19-9 in the Big Ten Tournament Semifinals.
- Matt Traynor led the offense with five goals and one assist. TJ Malone and Mac Costin each put up three goals and Kyle Lehman scored twice. Between the pipes, Jack Fracyon made 1 saves while only allowing eight goals.
LAST TIME OUT
- Penn State dropped its Big Ten opener to no. 9 Ohio State, 13-9 on Sunday night under the lights at Panzer Stadium.
- PSU got out to an early 2-0 lead, while holding the Buckeyes from scoring for the first eight minutes of play. Despite the score being tied at halftime, OSU managed to extend their lead using scoring runs which the Nittany Lions were unable to answer.
- Matt Traynor and Kyle Lehman made their return to the lineup for the first time in two games.
- PSU had three multiple goal scorers: Liam Matthews (2), Ethan Long (2) and Luke Walstrum (2).
- Alex Ross scooped a season high five ground balls. Colby Baldwin and Lucca DiBartolomeo each had four, a career best for DiBartolomeo.
- Lehman forced a personal best three turnovers to match the number of Kevin Parnham with three as well.
- PSU outshot OSU 40-29 and forced 22 miscues which is a team season high caused turnovers.
LIONS IN THE RANKS
- Alex Ross and Kevin Parnham rank 10th across the nation in caused turnovers per game (2.0) which is second in the Big Ten.
- Colby Baldwin has the 15-best face-off winning percentage (.590) in the country, leading his team to the 13th-best faceoff win percentage. He is 16th in ground balls per game (6.25).
- Hunter Aquino leads the conference in points per game (4.67) and ranks second in assists per game (1.88).
- As a team, PSU leads the conference in several categories including points per game (22.75), scoring offense (13.88), man-up offense (.448) and assists per game (8.88).
B1G HONORS
- Jack Fracyon was named the Big Ten Specialist of the Week following a strong performance against Villanova. He tallied 10 saves on 15 shot attempts. He also allowed just five goals, the third lowest number of goals allowed in his career.
- Hunter Aquino earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week after his first career hat-trick and two assists to total five points against no. 8 Princeton.
- Hunter Aquino notched his second Big Ten weekly honor, being tabbed the Big Ten Freshman of the Week this week (3/4) after a seven-point (two goals, five assists) performance against Yale.
- Colby Balwin was named the Big Ten Specialist of the Week this week (3/4) following a dominant 17-of-26 performance at the face-off x against Yale while adding a goal and an assist.
