Women's Golf Heads to Lake Keowee for Clemson Invitational

Nittany Lions set for first appearance at Clemson Invitational

SUNSET, S.C.  – The Penn State women's golf team is challenging itself at a new tournament, The Clemson Invitational, held at The Reserve at Lake Keowee in South Carolina this weekend.

The tournament will feature three single rounds days with split tee times from 9 a.m. – 10:40 a.m. on Friday and Saturday followed by a 9:30 a.m. shotgun start for Sunday’s final round.

A par-72, 6,489-yard, Jack Nicklaus designed course, The Reserve at Lake Keowee opened in 2002 and contains natural features typical of the foothills and the Blue Ridge Escarpment region – sloping terrain, lake and mountain views and mature forests of mixed hardwoods and pines.

THE FIELD

  • Four additional Big Ten schools join the Nittany Lions as Maryland, Nebraska, Michigan State and Ohio State are also making the trip to the Palmetto State this weekend.
  • The host Tigers are then joined by fellow ACC counterparts Louisville, Miami and SMU while SEC members Arkansas, LSU, Ole Miss, and Tennessee will take part in the weekend with Harvard, and UNC Wilmington rounding out the 15-team field.

THE TEAM

  • Penn State’s Lineup remains consistent from the first three events in the fall with minor tweaks as senior Jami Morris (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) slots back into the lineup after not playing in the Briar’s Creek Invitational two weeks ago.
  • Senior classmates Drew Nienhaus (St. Louis, Mo.) and Michelle Cox (Allentown, Pa.) remain atop the lineup with freshman classmates Jiratchaya Jiratthitinun (Bangkok, Thailand) and Lauren Thompstone (Paris, France) to round out the starting five.
  • Nienhaus is currently leading the team with a 73.09 stroke average and a pair of top-10 finishes to her credit while Jiratthitinun and Cox are second and third on the team with stroke averages of 73.39 and 73.74, respectively.

The Nittany Lions will be paired with LSU, Ohio State and Miami in the first round and will go off hole No. 1 beginning at 10 a.m.

Penn State will travel to Maryland next weekend for the Terrapin Invitational on March 6-7 for its final tune up before the B1G Championships on April 18-20, also in Maryland.
