Baseball Drops Series Finale At Michigan

Wolverines get go-ahead run in seventh; PSU hosts Bucknell on Tuesday

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Penn State baseball team fell 6-5 at Michigan on Sunday afternoon at Ray Fisher Stadium. The game was even at 5-5 when the Wolverines got the go-ahead run on a double to left in the seventh. The Nittany Lions dropped to 17-10 overall (6-6 Big Ten), while the Wolverines moved to 15-12 overall (7-5 Big Ten).

 

Logan Olson made his third start of the year for the Nittany Lions, going two innings and pitching into the third. He was charged with three runs on four hits. Olson posted one strikeout and walked two batters. Harrison Lollin went one inning, allowing two runs and striking out two.

 

Matthew VanOstenbridge tossed a scoreless fourth inning, giving up one hit. Ben DeMell went 2.2 innings. He allowed one run on three hits and struck out one. Dimond Loosli went 1.1 shutout innings.

 

Kurt Barr started for the Wolverines, tossing seven innings. He gave up five runs (one earned) on seven hits. Barr struck out seven batters and walked two. Max Debiec finished out the game with two scoreless innings.

 

Penn State notched five runs on seven hits. Ryan Weingartner collected two hits, including a double, and scored twice. Jack Porter contributed two hits, with a double, and drove in two runs. Cole Wagner added an RBI triple.

 

Michigan plated six runs on 10 hits. Cole Caruso and Greg Pace had solo homers. Colby Turner added two doubles and two RBI.

 

The Nittany Lions plated a pair of runs in the first. Weingartner led off the game with a single to left. Paxton Kling followed with an infield single. A double play left Weingartner on third. A grounder to the left side by Bryce Molinaro resulted in a throwing error as Weingartner scored and Molinaro hustled to second. Porter ripped a double to the corner in left to drive in Molinaro. PSU led 2-0.

 

Penn State added three runs in the third. Weingartner lined a double off the wall in left to begin the frame. Kling’s sharp grounder went through the third baseman’s legs as Weingartner scored and Kling hustled to second. A groundout moved Kling to third before a single by Porter brought in Kling. After Porter stole second, Wagner’s line drive bounced past the center for a triple as Porter raced home. The Nittany Lions held a 5-0 lead.

 

Michigan answered with five runs in the bottom half. Pace led off the inning with a fly ball over the right field wall. Benny Casillas followed with a single before a walk by Brayden Jefferis. Two batters later, Turner ripped a double into the left field corner to drive in Casillas and Jefferis. A wild pitch moved Turner to third and a groundout by Jeter Ybarra allowed Turner to score. Caruso blasted a solo homer to center to even the game at 5-5.

 

Michigan took the lead in the seventh. With two outs, Caruso held off on a 3-2 pitch for a walk before Matt Spear singled to put runners on the corners. Pinch-hitter Jonathan Kim ripped a double to the corner in left to bring in Caruso. Michigan led 6-5.

 

The Nittany Lions return to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Tuesday, March 31 to host Bucknell. First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m. on Dollar Dog Night and Military Appreciation Night.

 

Penn State travels to Minnesota next weekend for a three-game Big Ten series, beginning on Friday, April 4 at 7 p.m.

 

All home games at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park are free admission for all ages.
