Women’s Lacrosse Steals Overtime Victory Over No. 10 Michigan

Junior Erika Ho’s sixth point on the feed to junior Emma Kelly marked the game winner 1:30 into the overtime period

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Penn State earns second consecutive conference victory at no. 10 Michigan with 13-12 final score in overtime. Five goals and six points from junior Erika Ho, including the game-winning assist, powered PSU to back-to-back B1G wins on the road. The Nittany Lions move to 4-7, 2-2 Big Ten while the Wolverines fall to 7-4, 2-2 Big Ten.

Ho displayed her dominance, totaling five goals and one assist to total six points while winning five draw controls in the victory. Brooke Hoss contributed her second-straight hat-trick, also putting up one assist. Emma Kelly was the other multi-goal scored for PSU, adding two goals and three draw control wins, including the game-winning goal in the overtime stanza. Kelly MacKinney and Brooke Long also helped secure the road ranked win with one goal apiece.

Defensively, Sydney Manning made 11 saves on the afternoon between the pipers, nearly reaching her career high. Lauren Saltz was a force at the draw, earning six wins to lead Penn State to a 16-13 draw control tally.   

HOW IT HAPPENED 

Quarter 1 – Penn State 3, Michigan 3

Hoss picked up where she left off last weekend after her five-goal performance at Oregon, opening the scoring in Ann Arbor less than four minutes into the contest. No. 10-ranked Michigan had the answer just over a minute later, on a free-position goal to even the scoring.

Ho took the second Nittany Lion lead when a feed from Maggie Rezza connected with the junior on the cut for the score with 8:39 to go in the quarter.

Michigan tallied back-to-back scores to take its first lead of the afternoon at 3-2, but a near-buzzer beater goal from Brooke Long with two second left in the first kept the scoring even after 15 minutes of action.

Quarter 2 – Penn State 7, Michigan 5 

Ho put across two-straight goals to begin the second stanza, allowing PSU to take a 5-3 advantage. Michigan managed two more goals that were broken up by a goal from Kelly on a free position attempt.

Ho and the Nittany Lions got the final word of the quarter in the final 30 seconds of the stanza to push PSU to a 7-5 edge going into the break.

Quarter 3 – Penn State 10, Michigan 8

The third quarter got off to a back-and-forth beginning, with both teams trading goals throughout the period. Penn State proceeded to maintain an advantage, holding a minimum of a two-goal edge over Michigan.

Hoss found the back of the net to seal her hat-trick with one goal from the Wolverines in between her two in the third quarter. UM added another after Hoss’s third of the day, but Lauren Satlz put one away on a free position attempt for her 16th of the season. The home team notched a final goal in the last minute of the quarter to narrow PSU’s advantage to 10-8 heading into the final 15 minutes of game play.

Quarter 4 – Penn State 12, Michigan 12

Michigan had the first word of the final period of regulation, after both teams were held scoreless for the first five minutes of game stanza.

A goal from Ho was answered by one from the Wolverines just seconds later to keep the margin to one goal at 11-10. Once again, Penn State had the answer with a goal off the stick of MacKinney, following a feed from Hoss. Michigan managed to put another two consecutive goals across to knot the score at 12-12 and send the game to overtime.

Overtime – Penn State 13, Michigan 12

After Michigan won the opening draw of the overtime stanza, Manning made a crucial save and collected the ensuing ground ball to give PSU an offensive opportunity.=

Kelly found the game-winner off a feed from Ho to seal the Penn State upset over no. 10 Michigan on the road with a 13-12 final score.

The Nittany Lions return home next week for a Thursday night Big Ten Network battle against Rutgers. First draw between the two foes is set for 7 p.m. at Panzer Stadium.
