QUICK HITS

The Nittany Lions return to action in Big Ten play after traveling to Atlanta last weekend during the team’s bye week from league play to battle a pair of power four conference teams. Penn State dropped both contests on the road but returned to the win column last Tuesday night with an impressive and efficient 8-0 victory over Bucknell in five innings of play. Pitchers Mady Volpe and Abigail Britton combined for the shutout in the circle, while sophomore second baseman Michela Barbanente highlighted the offense with a pair of doubles on her 20th birthday. Sophomore designated player Brooke Klosowicz added additional acclaim to her already-impressive resume on Thursday afternoon, April 3, as the Johnsburg, Illinois, native was named the No. 6 utility in college softball in a release by Softball America. Klosowicz was one of 15 student-athletes recognized on the list and was one of just three student-athletes that represented the Big Ten Conference in the release.

HAYLIE BRUNSON: SILENT ASSASSIN

In her fourth and final season of collegiate softball action, senior right fielder Haylie Brunson has established herself as one of the most consistent hitters, both in the Big Ten Conference and on the national stage. Her 1.168 OPS stands third on the Nittany Lion roster this season, while her .383 average ranks third overall and second among routine members of the Nittany Lion starting lineup. Brunson’s impact in the 2025 season has only grown since the start of Big Ten Conference play in mid-March. The Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania, native is tied for the seventh-best batting average in league play among all Big Ten hitters, mustering a .500 average through the early going in the conference slate. Her OPS in Big Ten play of 1.442 ranks 16th in the conference and second on the team. As a hallmark player in the electric 2025 Penn State offense, Brunson has cracked her way onto multiple national statistical leaderboards. Her 11 doubles rank ninth in the Big Ten Conference and 47th nationally, while her 0.33 doubles per game rank eighth in the B1G and 60th in college softball. In the Big Ten, Brunson ranks 14th in total bases (81), 17th in slugging (.757) and 19th in home runs (nine).

Introducing Rutgers

ABOUT THE SCARLET KNIGHTS

Seven-year head coaching veteran Kristen Butler guides the Scarlet Knights into a crucial weekend series in Happy Valley, with Rutgers managing a 16-21 overall record paired with a 1-6 start to Big Ten Conference competition through the early going. Rutgers has won one of their last five games, as well as four of their last 10. The Scarlet Knights got out to a strong start in Big Ten play with a strong 5-1 performance against the Maryland Terrapins at home, but Rutgers has failed to find a second win in league action to date. The team dropped the final two games of its series with Maryland and proceeded to suffer four-straight run-rule losses to Pacific Northwest conference rivals Washington and Oregon.

In the batter’s box, the Scarlet Knights are directed by a pair of routine lineup contributors batting above .300, with Jillian Anderson (.376) and LA Matthews (.311) leading the way. Matthews owns the strongest home run tally on the team with three while leading the Rutgers roster with 30 runs batted in this season. The breakout pitching contribution of freshman Ella Harrison has highlighted the Scarlet Knight pitching staff in 2025, with the rookie earning multiple conference and national weekly accolades this season. Harrison boasts 10 of Rutgers 16 pitching victories while leading the team in ERA (2.03) and innings tossed (117.0).

STORY OF THE SERIES

Penn State and Rutgers get set for their 71st, 72nd and 73rd all-time meetings this weekend in Happy Valley, with the Nittany Lions leading the rivalry series between a pair of former Atlantic 10 Conference foes by a 40-30 differential. The programs first met in the 1980 season for an A10 doubleheader in Piscataway that the Scarlet Knights swept with 7-2 and 1-0 final scorelines. One of Penn State’s most frequent Big Ten Conference competitors in recent history, the Nittany Lions have come away with nine wins in the last 13 matchups highlighted by a four-game winning streak from the start of the 2023 series through last year’s lid-lifting matchup on the road in Piscataway on May 3.

The 2024 season series saw the Scarlet Knights win a series against the Blue & White for the first time since 2019, with RU dropping the first contest in 4-1 fashion before winning the next two, 5-3 and 9-5, to take the series and secure the No. 3 seed in the B1G Tournament. Rutgers and Penn State last faced off at Nittany Lion Softball Park and Beard Field in the 2023 campaign, with the Blue & White working together to muster a three-game series sweep of the Scarlet Knights. PSU registered a pair of shutouts in a Friday doubleheader, booking a 1-0 series-opening win before completing the day with a 3-0 shutout. Sunday’s series finale was an 8-3 finish that featured a grand slam by then-sophomore Maddie Gordon.
