Men’s Tennis Prepped To Take On No. 67 Northwestern, No. 27 Illinois

Nittany Lions will face Wildcats on Friday at 6 p.m., Fighting Illini on Saturday at 7 p.m.

EVANSTON/URBANA, Ill.- The Penn State men’s tennis team is ready to hit the road to face No. 67 Northwestern on Friday, Apr. 11 and No. 27 Illinois on Saturday, Apr. 12. Friday’s match, slated for 6 p.m., against the Wildcats will be hosted at the Combe Tennis Center in Evanston, Ill. and Saturday’s match, at 7 p.m., against Illinois will take place at Atkins Tennis Center in Urbana, Ill. 

 

THE NITTANY LIONS 

Penn State holds a 12-11 record, coming off a three-match weekend, including a split doubleheader. Freshman Denys Forgaci’s 6-0, 6-0 match at sixth singles put the Nittany Lions up 7-0 over Mercyhurst. Graduate Student Loren Byers holds a spot in the ITA rankings for the fourth week in a row, with his latest ranking at No. 55 in singles. 

 

SCOUTING THE WILDCATS 

Northwestern holds an 11-13 (3-6) record and is ranked at No. 67 as they host the Nittany Lions on Friday. The Wildcats dropped Big Ten matches against Nebraska, USC, UCLA, Illinois, Michigan State and Michigan. Northwestern does not hold any ranked positions on their roster. Historically, the Wildcats hold a 25-8 record over the Nittany Lions. 

 

EYEING THE FIGHITNG ILLINI 

Illinois welcome the Nittany Lions ranked at No. 27 with a 12-8 (5-4) record with Big Ten losses to Purdue, UCLA, Michigan and Michigan State. Before hosting Penn State, the Fighting Illini will host No. 4 Ohio State on Friday. Illinois holds two rankings on their roster, including No. 16 Kenta Miyoshi and No. 72 William Mroz in singles. Illinois holds a 36-5 record over Penn State historically. 

 

UP NEXT 

Following the weekend on the road, Penn State will finish its regular season at home against Big Ten opponents Purdue, on Friday, Apr. 18 at 10 a.m., and Indiana for Senior Day on Sunday, Apr. 20 at 1 p.m.
