Senior trio among nominees for college football player of the year award

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State senior quarterback Drew Allar, senior running back Kaytron Allen and senior running back Nicholas Singleton were tabbed to the Maxwell Award Watch List on Monday.

 

The Maxwell Award has been presented to the College Player of the Year since 1937 and is named in honor of Robert "Tiny" Maxwell who was a former standout at the Swarthmore College and a renowned sportswriter and football official.

 

Drew Allar · Sr. · QB · 6-5 · 238 · Medina, Ohio · Medina

  • Was an All-Big Ten honorable mention selection by the coaches and media in 2023 and 2024.
  • Named a Davey O’Brien Award Semifinalist last season.
  • Has completed 63 percent of his passes for 6,302 yards and 53 touchdowns, while adding 560 rushing yards and 11 scores.
  • Ranks first all-time at Penn State in completion percentage (62.9) and interception percentage (1.19).
  • Holds third at Penn State with 53 career touchdown passes and a 144.0 passing efficiency, while ranking fifth in completions (530), tied for fifth in 200-yard passing games (16), sixth in passing yards (6,302) and passing attempts (843), tied for ninth in yards per attempt (7.5) and 10th in touchdown pass percentage (6.28).
  • Among PSU quarterbacks, ranks tied for sixth in rushing touchdowns (11) and 10th in rushing yards (543).
  • Sits fourth all-time at PSU in touchdowns responsible for (64), fifth in total offense (6,862), eighth in wins by a starting quarterback (23) and 10th in starting quarterback win percentage (.793).
  • Since 1956, joins Bryce Petty (Baylor, 2011-14) as the only FBS quarterbacks with 800+ career pass attempts, 50+ touchdown passes and 10 or less interceptions.
  • In 2024, completed 262-of-394 passes for 3,327 yards and 24 touchdowns, while rushing for 302 yards and six touchdowns.

  • Picked up second-team All-Big Ten honors from the coaches and third-team from the media in 2023.
  • In his Nittany Lion career, has rushed for 2,877 yards and 24 touchdowns on 559 rushes, averaging 5.1 yards per rush. Has added 52 receptions for 422 yards and four touchdowns.
  • Ranks ninth all-time at Penn State in rushing attempts (559), 11th in rushing yards (2,877) and tied for 15th in rushing touchdowns (24).
  • Owns eight career 100-yard rushing games and four career games with multiple rushing touchdowns.
  • Among returning FBS players, ranks second behind teammate Nicholas Singleton with 2,877 rushing yards and is tied for fourth with 24 rushing touchdowns.
  • In 2024, rushed for 1,108 yards on 220 carries (5.1 average) with eight touchdowns, while adding 18 receptions for 153 yards and two touchdowns.
  • Posted four 100-yard rushing games, while ranking fifth in the Big Ten with 1,108 rushing yards.

  • Tabbed Walter Camp Football Foundation Preseason All-America.
  • Voted All-Big Ten honorable mention in 2024 as a running back and return specialist.
  • Earned third-team All-Big Ten honors in 2023 and was Big Ten Thompson-Randle El Freshman of the Year.
  • Owns 2,912 rushing yards, 32 rushing touchdowns, 78 receptions, 768 receiving yards, eight touchdowns and 993 kick return yards.
  • He has eight career 100-yard rushing games, eight games with multiple rushing touchdowns and two games with three rushing scores.
  • He has 22 career 20+ yard runs, 14 30+ yards, 12 40+ yards, five 50+ yards, two 60+ yards, two 70+ yards and one 80+ yards.
  • Singleton leads returning FBS players with 2,912 career rushing yards, 32 career rushing touchdowns and 4,673 career all-purpose yards.
  • He is also the only FBS player averaging 5.8 yards per rush on 490+ career rushing attempts.
  • Ranks fifth all-time at Penn State in rushing touchdowns (32), eighth in rushing average (5.8), 10th in rushing yards (2,912), 12th in rushing attempts (499) and second in career total touchdowns (41).
  • Averaging 24.2 yards per kick return, including a 100-yard return for a touchdown, in his career.

 

The Maxwell Football Club has once again partnered with Pro Football Focus (PFF) and Phil Steele Publications as selection committee partners. PFF provides detailed metrics and performance-based assessments to selection committee staff, with several senior PFF analysts as members of the selection committee.

 

Semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be announced on November 11, while the three finalists for the Maxwell Award will be unveiled on November 25. The winners of the 89th Maxwell Award will be announced as part of The Home Depot College Football Awards Show held on Friday, December 12. The formal presentations of the Maxwell Award will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards on Friday, March 13, 2026 at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta, Georgia.
