PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The second-ranked Penn State women’s volleyball team suffered its first defeat of the season Sunday, falling 3-1 (21-25, 25-23, 25-20, 31-29) to No. 13 Arizona State at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh. The match was the first of two for both teams in the State Farm Women’s Volleyball Showcase.
The Nittany Lions dropped to 2-1 on the season and now turn their attention to No. 25 TCU. That match is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Monday at PPG Paints Arena. The Sun Devils improved to 2-0.
Penn State received a big performance from Kennedy Martin, who hit .312 with 23 kills, 12 digs, and three blocks. It was her 56th-consecutive match with double-digit kills. Arizona State countered with a great showing by Noemie Glover, who hit .372 with 22 kills, 10 blocks, and two digs.
Set 1
Penn State looked strong in the first set, hitting .519 behind 10 assists from Izzy Starck on its way to a 25-21 win. Caroline Jurevicius hit .833 with five kills, while Martin and Emmi Sellman added four kills apiece. The Nittany Lions used a 3-0 run to go up 19-15, getting a kill from Martin, an ace from Starck, and a block by Martin and Maggie Mendelson. The Sun Devils got back within one at 21-20, but the Nittany Lions responded with kills by Jurevicius and Martin. Jurevicius later came through with the kill for set point.
Set 2
Arizona State hit just .167 in the second set but won a defensive battle by holding Penn State to .061 hitting in a 25-23 win. The Nittany Lions led late at 21-20 following a kill by Martin. The Sun Devils countered with the next two points before Jurevicius knotted the score at 22-all with a kill. Back-to-back points by the Sun Devils gave them a chance at set point and forced a Penn State timeout. The set continued with a service error after the break. Glover followed with her sixth kill of the set for the final point.
Set 3
Five blocks helped Arizona State roll to a 25-20 win in set three. The Sun Devils led by as much as six at 15-9. The Nittany Lions got as close as two at 16-14 and again at 20-18 but couldn’t get the clutch kill to come back.
Set 4
Arizona State came out on top 31-29 in a set that featured 22 ties and 11 lead changes. Martin and Glover had a great individual battle with Martin tallying 11 kills in the set and Glover hitting .471 with 10 kills. The Nittany Lions had chances for set point leading 24-23 and again at 28-27. Both were stopped with kills by Glover. A Penn State service error tied the score at 29-29. Glover made it 30-29 with a kill before the match closed with an attack error by the Nittany Lions.
