As a team the Nittany Lions also had their best round on Tuesday concluding the week with a red figure day carding 1-under, 287. Penn State finished the week 19-over, 883, while Notre Dame secured the championship at 35-under, a full 10 shots clear of Michigan in second. Missouri (13-under), Rutgers (11-under) and UNCW (9-under) rounded out the top-five.
Freshman Jackson Saroney was also in red figures on Tuesday firing a 1-under, 71, closing the day the same way he began with birdies on two of his final four holes on the way in. Saroney carded 8-over, 224, for the week to finish in a tie for 40th position.
Local boy, Zach Smith, opened the week with an even-par, 72, before giving some strokes back over the final two rounds and finishing 49th at 13-over, 229.
Senior Andres Barraza finished the week at 16-under while junior Tim Peters was disqualified following the second round after signing for a lower score, officially finishing last in the field, however, he turned in a stellar countable round on Tuesday with a 1-over, 73, highlighted by an opening hole eagle at the Par-5 13th and a birdie finish on 12.
Playing as an individual, freshman Nick Werner carded 31-over for the week.
“The course conditions were impeccable all week. Good play was rewarded and bad play punished as demonstrated by the low winning score and the high scores on the back end,” commented head coach Mark Leon. “We had outstanding play from Alex Creamean, who was in the mix all week and registered an outstanding final round. It was also encouraging to see the resilience of Jackson Saroney in his first tournament as a freshman. He improved every day and was able to close with an under-par round for us.”
Penn State will take the next week off from competition before competing at the Nemacolin Collegiate Invitational hosted by West Virginia University at the Nemacolin Resort in Farmington, Pennsylvania.
