UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State’s Kennedy Martin was named the Big Ten Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week on Monday after putting up huge numbers in conference matches against No. 17 USC and UCLA last week at Rec Hall.
Martin averaged 7.00 kills/set while hitting .348 over the two matches. She racked up 63 total kills, hitting .292 with 29 kills, 13 digs, five blocks, and two aces in a five-set win over the Trojans and .403 with a career-high 34 kills in a five-set match against the Bruins.
The junior came through in the clutch in the win over USC on Friday. She contributed on each of the team’s final eight points in a 15-13 win in the fifth set, totaling six kills and two blocks during that stretch.
Martin’s 34 kills against UCLA on Sunday were the most in the nation in a four-set match this season. Only two other players in the country have reached 34 kills this season and both came in five-set matches. Martin had 15 kills on .583 hitting in the fourth set alone. She also had 11 kills on .529 hitting in the first set.
After the big week, Martin currently ranks first in the Big Ten and second in the nation in both points/set (5.97) and kills/set (5.23). She is now a two-time Big Ten Player of the Week.
