NEWARK, Del. – The No. 6 Nittany Lions cruised to a 5-0 win over Delaware at Fred Rust Ice Arena to notch their first conference win of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Matilde Fantin took a shot while going into the offensive zone on a 2-on-1 with Grace Outwater five minutes into the game and Outwater buried the rebound to put Penn State up 1-0.
- Early in the second period, Sophie Morrow picked up a loose puck after Delaware cleared their zone and went into the slot and took a shot for her first collegiate goal.
- Seven minutes into the second period, Maddy Christian led a break down the ice, made a move in the neutral zone then dished a pass to Grace Outwater who scored her second goal of the night.
- On the penalty kill with just under 12 minutes to go, Grace Outwater forced a turnover on the defensive blue line and went down on a breakaway and shot and scored to make it 4-0.
- With under a minute to go in the game, Maddy Christian received an breakout pass and skated by everyone and shot and scored on a breakaway.
GOALTENDERS
- Senior goaltender Katie DeSa made 10 saves for her second shutout of the season and 15th of her career.
- Delaware goaltender Charlotte Payne had a career-high 51 saves in the loss, including making 20 in the second period.
STATS AND NOTES
- The Nittany Lions recorded 56 shots on goal, their most in a game this season.
- 56 shots on goal is the ninth most Penn State has ever had in a game.
- Penn State only allowed 10 shots on goal which is the least they’ve allowed in a single game since Feb. 11, 2022 when LIU only had six shots on goal.
- Grace Outwater had three goals for her second career hat trick.
- She now leads Penn State in points and goals with six goals on the year and one assist.
- Sophie Morrow scored the first goal of her collegiate career, making her the third Nittany Lion freshman to score this season.
- Maddy Christian scored her third goal of the season and 30th of her career.
- She continues to lead all Penn State skaters with +9 rating and sits sixth nationally in the category.
