No. 6 Penn State Sweeps Delaware, Stays Unbeaten

The Nittany Lions held their opponents to a program-record one shot on goal

NEWARK, Del. – The No. 6 Nittany Lions shutout Delaware 7-0 while holding the Blue Hens to one shot on goal to complete the sweep in their first conference series of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Maddy Christian deflected a pass and picked up the loose puck in the neutral zone before skating in herself shorthanded and shooting high corner to make it 1-0 just under two minutes into the second period.
  • One minute and 20 seconds later, Kendall Butze passed it to Danica Maynard in the offensive zone and she skated from the top of circle to the dot and shot upper corner to make it 2-0.
  • Matilde Fantin fought for a loose puck on the boards and passed it to Danica Maynard at the blue line who stepped in and shot it through traffic for her second goal of the game just three minutes into the third period.
  • After a shot by Sophie Morrow richocheted off Abby Stonehouse directly to Nicole Hall, she shot and scored with the Delaware goaltender out of position with 11:50 to go in the third,
  • 24 seconds later, Danica Maynard found Matilde Fantin in the low slot alone and she shot and scored to make it 5-0.
  • With 6:46 to go, the Blue Hens won a defensive zone faceoff and turned it over in the slot to Matilde Fantin who skated in and shot bar down to make it 6-0.
  • Just over a minute later, Danica Maynard found Maddy Christian on the far post and lifted it over the Delaware goaltender for her second of the afternoon.

GOALTENDERS

  • Maddy Campbell made her first collegiate start, making one save in the shutout.
  • Delaware goaltender Mattie Robitzer made a career high 62 saves.

STATS AND NOTES

  • The Nittany Lions outshot Delaware 69-1, the least shots allowed by the Nittany Lions in program history and widest margin of shots on goal.
  • It is tied for the second most shots on goal in program history, the Nittany Lions matched the 69-shot mark against Robert Morris on Feb. 10, 2024.
  • Seven goals ties for the 10th most scored in a game by the Nittany Lions.
  • It last happened on Nov. 16, 2024 against Lindenwood.
  • Maddy Christian had two goals, giving her a point in all six games this season.
  • She continues to lead the nation in game-winning goals, notching her third of the season.
  • Danica Maynard had two goals and two assists, bringing her point total to nine, leading the Nittany Lions.
  • Maynard currently sits fifth nationally in points.
  • Penn State recorded 16 points, their most in a game this season and most since having 30 against Stonehill on Oct. 26, 2024.
