Women’s Rugby 2025 Season First Half Recap

8/30 vs. Wheeling (L 0-87)

The Nittany Lions opened the season at home just one week after preseason against the NCR DI reigning National Champions, Wheeling University.  Wheeling would score first at around the 5-minute mark, with a Penalty Kick to make the score 0-3.  Wheeling would go on to score four tries in the first half, and the Nittany Lions went into the half down 31-0. Handling errors were the Nittany Lions nemesis on attack.  The second half saw Wheeling score several tries that would end the game with the Lions down 0-87.  

 

9/13 at MSM (L 14-22)

The second match of the season was a friendly match against Mount Saint Mary’s in Emmittsburg, MD.  The Mount would score first at the 14-minute mark to make the game 0-5.  The Nittany Lions struggled to get consistent attack going in the first have and were held scoreless while Mount scored a second try to bring the score to 12-0 at halftime.  Right at the start of the second half Mount would score their third try of the game making it 0-17.  Penn State was able to gain some momentum and scored the next two tries at the 22-minute mark and the 29-minute mark to make the game a close 14-17 contest.  However, with just under 5 minutes left in the game Mount Saint Mary’s would score their fourth try bringing the final score to 14-22. 

 

9/20 at Davenport (L 12-42)

For their third match of the season the Nittany Lions travelled out to Grand Rapids, MI to take on Davenport University in another friendly match.  Davenport got to an early lead with a try at the 3-minute mark (0-5).  However, Penn State would answer with a try at the 17-minute mark, and a conversion put the Nittany Lions up 7-5.  Davenport would score three more tries in the first half to bring the halftime score to 7-20.  The second half saw the same number of tries by each side and the final score came to 12-42.

9/26 at Walsh (W 22-19)

In their fourth game of the season and second league match, Penn State travelled to Walsh University in NCR’s Featured Friday Night Game of the Week. The Nittany Lions came out strong with a penalty kick and two tries to take a 15-0 lead. Walsh would score their first try of the game about half-way through the first half to make the score 15-5.  With around 10 minutes left in the first half Penn State would score their third try of the game and took a commanding 22-5.  Walsh came out fighting in the second half, scoring around the 50 and 70-minute marks. Penn State was able to maintain composure and hold Walsh off for the remainder of the game to make the final score 22-19.

10/4 vs. Life (L 77-7)

For their fifth game of the season Penn State hosted Life University in a friendly match.  Life took the early lead at 7 minutes in with a try off a quick tap penalty. Life would score a total of six tries in the first half to bring the score to 34-0.  To start the second half Life would score 5 tries in the first 25 minutes.  Penn State would score their first and only try of the game at around the 30-minute mark after some organized and consistent attack bringing the score to 7-65.  Life would score twice more to make the final score 7-77.
