UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The No. 6 Penn State women’s ice hockey team scored four goals in the second period on their way to a 6-1 win over Lindenwood to move to 5-0 in conference.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Lindenwood’s Michaela Paulinyova opened the scoring by forcing a turnover while shorthanded and going down on a breakaway to score just under 10 minutes into the first period.
- Just under two minutes into the second period on the penalty kill, Grace Outwater forced a turnover and went on an offensive rush with Tessa Janecke, finding her cross-crease to tie the game at one.
- Four minutes later, Matilde Fantin received a pass from Sophie Morrow and curled into the offensive zone shooting top corner to take the lead.
- With under 10 minutes to go in the period, Mikah Keller found Tessa Janecke with a cross-ice pass on the power play and she buried a one-timer to make it 3-1.
- Less than five minutes later, Matilde Fantin won a puck battle pushing it to Nicole Hall in front of the net and she shot it top corner to score.
- Early in the third period, Maddy Christian passed it to Matilde Fantin in the offensive zone to set up a 2-on-1 for her and Grace Outwater who would end up burying the cross-crease pass.
- A minute later, Mya Vaslet picked up a loose puck in the defensive zone and went coast-to-coast before finding Nicole Hall, who shot and scored.
GOALTENDERS
- Senior goaltender Katie DeSa made 11 saves in the game for her eighth win of the season.
- Lindenwood’s Lexington Secreto made 44 saves including 21 in a scoreless first period for the Nittany Lions.
STATS AND NOTES
- Tessa Janecke scored twice to bring her season total to five and her career total to 70.
- She is currently sixth among active players in career goals and pushed her point streak to eight games dating back to last season’s NCAA Tournament game.
- Janecke’s first goal came shorthanded for PSU’s third of the year to lead the nation in the category.
- Nicole Hall had two goals and an assist for the first multi-goal game of her career.
- Danica Maynard notched an assist for her 11th of the season to the lead the Nittany Lions.
- She is now second nationally in assists.
- The Nittany Lions trailed for the first time all season after Lindenwood’s first period goal.
- Grace Outwater scored her ninth goal of the season and is now third nationally in goals scored.
