No. 6/7 Women’s Ice Hockey Completes Sweep at Vermont

Five different Nittany Lions score to move to 4-0.

BURLINGTON, Vt. – The No. 6/7 Nittany Lions defeated Vermont 5-3 on Saturday afternoon on their way to another weekend sweep to begin the 2025-26 season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Danica Maynard dumped a puck into the offensive zone early in the first period and Vermont goaltender Lily Prendergast misplayed it behind the net and Taylor Lum picked up the loose puck and scored on the empty net.
  • Just over two minutes later on the Vermont power play there was a scramble in front of the net and Jose Hemp pushed in the puck for her first of the season.
  • With six minutes to go in the first period and on the power play Tessa Janecke took a shot and it deflected to Mikah Keller who shot in the loose puck to make it 2-1.
  • Danica Maynard hit McKenna Walsh as she was entering the offensive zone with just under a minute left and she found Tessa Janecke with a cross-crease pass who fired it in the back of the net to push the Nittany Lion lead.
  • Three minutes into the second period, Leah Stecker broke the puck out of the defensive zone and found Maddy Christian alone behind the Vermont defense and she went in and scored to make it 4-1.
  • Leah Stecker then jumped on a loose puck at the point, walked in and picked the far corner for her first of the year 12 minutes into the period.
  • Six minutes into the third period, Vermont’s Makena Lloyd-Howe received centering pass after Darci Matson intercepted a Penn State pass and scored to bring the Catamounts within three.
  • With under seven minutes to go Vermont’s Lauren O’Hara took a shot and picked up her own rebound and scored on a wraparound attempt to make it a two-goal game.

GOALTENDERS

  • Senior goaltender Katie DeSa made 10 saves for her fourth win of the season and 41st of her career.
  • Lily Prendergast made the first start of her collegiate career, making 32 saves.

STATS AND NOTES

  • Penn State had five different goal scorers for the second time this season.
  • Mikah Keller scored her first collegiate goal, making her the second freshman to score on the Nittany Lions.
  • Taylor Lum scored her first goal at Penn State and 23rd of her career.
  • Tessa Janecke continued her hot start, scoring her third goal of the season 66th of her career.
  • McKenna Walsh recorded two assists for her third career multi-assist game.
  • Leah Stecker recorded her first goal of the season while adding an assist.
  • She now leads all Nittany Lion defenders in points with five.
  • Danica Maynard has recorded an assist in all four games this season.
