PENN STATE OUTLOOK

The women’s cross country team currently is ranked 10th nationally and second in the Mid-Atlantic Region in the most recent USTFCCCA coaches’ poll. The men’s team currently sits fifth in the Mid-Atlantic Region. Both Nittany Lions teams are coming off strong showings at the Big Ten Championships with the women finishing runner-up and the men coming eighth.

The No. 10 Penn State women earned their runner-up finish by placing three runners in the top 15 with Florence Caron leading the way, finishing fourth overall, her best career finish at the Big Ten Championships. Charlotte Costich captured a PR at 20:11.7, finishing second among the Nittany Lions and eighth overall. Ada Rand rounded out the top three finishers for PSU, running a 20:23.3. Caron and Costich were each named to the All-Big Ten First Team while Ada Rand earned an All-Big Ten Second Team accolade.

The men’s squad finished in the same place they did a season ago at Big Ten’s at eighth. Nick Sloff continued to lead the Nittany Lions, posting a time of 24:00.4, finishing 23rd overall. Ryan Watson came next, finishing 40th overall with a time of 24:18.8 and Justin Healey ran a 24:25.8, finishing 52nd overall as the third finisher for PSU.

THE NCAA MID-ATLANTIC REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

The women’s team is coming off back-to-back trips to the NCAA Cross Country Championships after finishing top three in the last two regionals. A season ago, each of the women’s top five finishers were named All-Region. Florence Caron led the way with a fourth place finish with a 19:41.7. Returners Hayley Kitching (22nd, 20:34.9) and Claire Daniels (23rd, 20:35.6) each were All-Region finishers as well.

Brian DiCola is the lone All-Region returner from last season’s event while the team finished fourth overall (29:37.1). He was also the only Nittany Lion to qualify for the NCAA Cross Country Championships.
