UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State wrestling (1-0, 0-0 B1G) opened up the 2025-26 wrestling season by shutting out visiting Oklahoma (0-1). The Nittany Lions, under the guidance of head coach Cael Sanderson, rolled to a 45-0 win over the Sooners in the season opener, held in the Bryce Jordan Center.
The Nittany Lion line-up featured four freshmen and two sophomores. Penn State picked up its first shutout since blanking Michigan 39-0 on Feb. 7, 2025, in the Jordan Center.
The dual began at 197 where redshirt freshman Connor Mirasola got the call and took on No. 8 DJ Parker. Mirasola dominated the action, notching four takedowns and riding time to post an impressive 13-3 major decision. Redshirt freshman Cole Mirasola, ranked No. 11 at 285, followed up his brother’s win with a strong 5-2 victory over No. 24 Juan Mora to give the Nittany Lions a 7-0 lead.
Luke Lilledahl, ranked No. 3 at 125, continued Penn State’s hot start. He used a late takedown to secure bonus points in a 14-4 major decision over Conrad Hendrickson. True freshman Marcus Blaze made his collegiate debut and thrilled the Jordan Center crowd with an 18-3 tech fall over Conrad Hendrikson, picking up the final points with back points at 5:13. Junior Aaron Nagao, ranked No. 11 at 141, returned to the mat for the first time in over a year and posted 9-5 win over Alex Braun . Penn State led 19-0 at halftime.
Junior Shayne Van Ness, ranked No. 1 at 149, got the second half off to a hot start, rolling to a 20-1 tech fall over Layton Schneider at the 5:29 mark to put Penn State up 24-0. Redshirt freshman Joe Sealey got the call at 157 and thrilled the BJC faithful by rolling to a 19-4 tech fall (5:47) over Landyn Sommer. Junior Mitchell Mesenbrink, ranked No. 1 at 165, picked up more bonus points for Penn State, posting the 19-4 tech fall in the first period at 2:45.
Senior Levi Haines, ranked No. 1 at 174, posted Penn State’s first fall of the night, getting a second period pin over No. 33 Carter Schubert at 4:15 to put Penn State on top 40-0. Sophomore Rocco Welsh, ranked No. 2 at 184, made his Penn State debut and thrilled the Penn State fans with a dominating 19-4 tech fall over Andres Thompson at 5:28. Welsch’s debut win made the final score 45-0 in Penn State’s favor.
Penn State posted a gaudy 35-1 edge in takedowns. The Nittany Lions picked up 15 points off a pin (Haines), five tech falls (Blaze, Van Ness, Sealey, Mesenbrink, Welsh) and two majors (Connor Mirasola, Lilledahl).
Penn State is now 1-0 on the year, 0-0 in the Big Ten. Oklahoma falls to 0-1. The Nittany Lions return to action next weekend, taking part in the Black Knight Invitational on Sunday, Nov. 23, at Army West Point.

DUAL MEET BOUT-BY-BOUT:
197: Redshirt freshman Connor Mirasola took on No. 8 DJ Parker. Mirasola and Parker worked the middle of the mat in neutral for the first minute-plus. Mirasola worked his way in on a low single and notched the bout’s first takedown at the :48 mark to take a 3-0 lead. Parker escaped to a 3-1 score and the bout moved to the second period with Mirasola leading by two. Parker chose down to start the second period and escaped to a 3-2 score. Mirasola quickly moved in for another takedown, nabbing Parker’s ankle for a 6-2 lead at 1:20. Mirasola maintained control long enough to work his riding time over 1:00 before Parker escaped to a 6-3 score. Parker took a late shot and Mirasola countered for a last second takedown to lead 9-3 after two periods. Mirasola chose neutral to start the third period. The duo battled evenly in neutral for the bulk of the period. Mirasola battled for a final takedown to post the 13-3 major decision with 1:12 in riding time.
285: Redshirt freshman No. 11 Cole Mirasola met No. 24 Juan Mora. Mora worked his way in on a single at the 2:00 mark but Mirasola countered the effort for a takedown of his own to lead 3-0. Mora escaped to a 3-1 score after a :35 Mirasola ride and the first period ended with the Nittany Lion leading by two. Mora chose down to start the middle stanza. Mirasola controlled the Sooner until he had 1:14 in riding time before Mora escaped to a 3-2 score. Mirasola countered another Mora shot at :30 but the Sooner was able to defend the move and force a reset out of bounds. Mirasola chose down to start the third period and quickly escaped to a 4-2 lead, maintaining 1:06 in riding time. Mirasola finished the bout on his feet and walked away with a 5-2 win.
125: No. 3 Luke Lilledahl met Conrad Hendrikson. Lilledahl connected on a low shot at 2:10 and finished off the takedown for a 3-0 lead just over a minute into the bout. Hendrikson escaped as he moved his way out of bounds and Lilledahl led by two with 1:30 on the clock. The Nittany Lion sophomore quickly took the Sooner down again to lead 6-1. Lilledahl maintained control through the :40 mark before Hendrikson escaped to a 6-2 score. Lilledahl led 6-2 with 1:02 in riding time after one. He chose down to start the second and quickly escaped to a 7-2 lead. Lilledahl controlled the action in the middle of the mat, battling in neutral for the rest of the period, and led 7-2 after two. Hendrickson chose down to start the third period. Lilledahl worked his riding time back over 1:00 with a strong ride. He cut the Sooner loose to a 7-3 score, working for bonus points. Lilledahl blew through Hendrickson’s waist for another takedown and a 10-3 lead with :41 on the clock. Lilledahl cut Hendrickson loose to a 10-4 score and began chasing the Sooner down for another takedown, which he picked up with :05 on the clock. He walked away with a 14-4 major with 1:55 in riding time.
133: True freshman Marcus Blaze took on Tyson Charmoli. Blaze picked up his first collegiate takedown at the 1:11 mark, using a low double to take a 3-0 lead. Blaze controlled action on top, forcing Charmoli into a stall warning. He then locked up a cradle and turned Charmoli to his back, but time ran out before he could score and Blaze led 3-0 with 1:11 in time after one. Blaze chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 4-0 lead. He pressured Charmoli back to the outside circle and took him down again to take a 7-1 lead after cutting him loose. He added another takedown and cut at :40 to lead 10-1, picked up a point on a stall and then took a 14-3 lead with another takedown and cut at :20. Charoli chose down to start the third and Blaze quickly ended the match, turning him for four back points to post the 18-3 technical fall at 5:13.
141: No. 11 Aaron Nagao battled Alex Braun. Nagao turned an early scramble into a takedown at 2:35 and led 3-0 early. He then dominated the action on top, building up over 1:00 in riding time but giving up a stall warning in the process. Nagao gave up reversal after a reset, then reversed Bruan himself to lead 5-2 with 2:07 in riding time after one. Braun chose neutral to start the second period and took Nagao down to tie the bout, but Nagao quickly reversed him for a 7-5 lead at 1:00. Nagao finished with a rideout and led 7-5 with clinched riding time (3:09). Nagao chose down to start the third and quickly escaped to an 8-5 lead. Nagao countered a Braun shot, forcing a scramble that ended in potentially dangerous with :40 on the clock. Nagao finished the bout in neutral and, with 3: riding time, posted the 9-5 win.
149: No. 1 Shayne Van Ness faced off against Layton Schneider. Van Ness scored quickly, taking Schneider down to open up a 3-0 lead. He built up a big riding time edge, forcing Schneider into a stall warning at :40 as well. Van Ness worked to turn the Sooner for the entirety of the period but sleeting for a 3-0 lead with 2:29 in time after one. Schneider chose neutral to start the second period and Van Ness quickly took the Sooner down to lead 6-1 after cutting him loose. He used a high shot for a third takedown, then worked for four nearfall and a 13-1 lead with :50 on the clock. Van Ness picked up a stall points with :13 on the clock and led 14-1 with clinched riding time after two. Van Ness chose down to start the third period and quickly reversed the Sooner. He added four back points and rolled to the 20-1 tech fall at 5:29.
157: Redshirt freshman Joe Sealey met Landyn Sommer. Sealey scored first, taking Sommer down for an early 3-1 after a quick Sooner escape. The Lion freshman nearly scored on a scramble at 1:50 but the wrestlers rolled out of bounds, forcing a reset. Sealey continued to work his offense, picking up a second takedown to lead 6-2 with :40 on the clock. He quickly turned another low shot into a third takedown and led 9-2 after the first period. Sommer chose down to start the second period. Sealey worked his time up over 1:00 before the Sooner escaped to a 9-3 score. Sealey worked the outside circle perfectly in picking up a fourth takedown to take a 12-3 lead at 1:20. The Sooner escaped to a 12-4 score and then Sealey forced a stall warning before taking him down again to lead 15-4 after two. Sealey chose down to start the third and was cut loose by Sommer. He then moved in for a final takedown, ending the match with a 19-4 tech fall at 5:47.
165: No. 1 Mitchell Mesenbrink battled Owen Eck. Mesenbrink scored quickly, taking Eck down in the opening seconds to lead 3-1. He muscled the Sooner over for a second takedown at 2:20 and led 6-1. Mesenbrink worked Eck to his back briefly, but the Sooner rolled out of danger and Mesenbrink continued on top. Mesenbrink cut Eck loose at a reset and immediately connected on a low single to open up a 9-3 lead after a quick Sooner escape. Mesenbrink quickly took him down a fourth time and turned him for four back points to lead 16-3 at :22. He cut Eck loose and finished off the match with a final takedown, winning 19-4 at 2:45.
174: No. 1 Levi Haines met No. 33 Carter Schubert. Haines and Schubert moved in at the same time when Schubert hit his head and sent Haines into concussion protocol. The Lion returned to the mat after a couple minutes and action resumed with 2:54 on the clock. Haines and Schubert battled in the center circle through the 2:00 mark. Haines worked a high single into a late takedown and then turned Schubert for four nearfall to lead 7-0 after one. Schubert chose down to start the second period. Haines controlled the action on top, building up over 1:00 in time, forcing a stall warning and then turning the Sooner to his back for the fall at 4:15.
285: No. 2 Rocco Welsh faced off against Anders Thompson. Welsch scored quickly, taking Thompson down for a 3-1 lead after a Sooner escape. The new Nittany Lion used a fast single for a second takedown and a 6-2 lead after cutting Thompson loose at 1:03. Welsh took a 9-2 lead with a third first period takedown and carried that lead, with 1:30 in riding time. Welsh chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 10-2 lead. Welsh took a 13-2 lead with a quick takedown, cut Thomspon loose and took him down again to lead 16-3 after two. Thompson chose down to start the third period, Welsh cut him loose, and then ended the bout with a final takedown, posting the 19-4 tech fall at 5:28.
