No. 4 Nittany Lions Suffer First Loss of the Season at No. 7 Northeastern

After falling behind 3-0, Penn State’s comeback bid fell short.

BOSTON – The No. 4 Penn State women’s ice hockey suffered its first loss of the season at No. 7 Northeastern on Friday afternoon, falling 3-2 at Matthews Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • With 24 seconds left in the first period, Northeastern’s Jaden Bogden hammered home a pass on a three-on-one offensive rush to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead entering the first intermission.
  • Over halfway through the second period, Northeastern’s Alessi Baechler received a pass at the point and shot it through traffic past Katie DeSa to push the lead to 2-0.
  • Three minutes later on a delayed penalty, Jaden Bogden found Lily Shannon on the close post below the circles and she shot it past Katie DeSa to make it 3-0.
  • Three a half minutes into the third period, Mikah Keller won a faceoff and Grace Outwater took a shot immediately, scoring to bring the Nittany Lions back within two goals.
  • Four minutes later, the Nittany Lions battled for the puck in front of the Northeastern goal with Mya Vaslet eventually pushing it in to score.

GOALTENDERS

  • Senior goaltender Katie DeSa allowed three goals on eight shots in the first two periods.
  • Freshman Maddy Campbell started the third period and made 10 saves.
  • Northeastern goaltender Lisa Jonsson made 34 saves in the win.

STATS AND NOTES

  • Grace Outwater scored her 12th goal of the season, leading PSU.
  • Mikah Keller notched her 10th assist of the season, which is second among all freshman on the Nittany Lions.
  • Mya Vaslet scored her second goal of the season with both coming in the last to weekends.
  • Abby Stonehouse had an assist to extend her point streak to six games, one behind Grace Outwater for the longest active streak on Penn State.
  • Kately Roberts has notched an assist in four of her last five games.
  • Northeastern now leads the head-to-head series 3-2.
