Wiebusch Named B1G Hockey Second Star of the Week

Sophomore JJ Wiebusch earns second Big Ten weekly award of the season following Ohio State sweep

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Sophomore JJ Wiebusch (Verona, Wis.) was named the Big Ten Hockey Second Star of the Week for his performances in a series sweep last week at then-No. 17 Ohio State to open Big Ten play as announced by the league office on Tuesday morning.

This marks the second career weekly accolade for Wiebusch and his second this season after being named the B1G First Star of the Week back on October 14. This also marks the fifth-straight week a Nittany Lion has been represented in the three stars after Charlie Cerrato (October 7) and Matt DiMarsico (October 21) joined Wiebusch as First Stars of the Week and freshman Gavin McKenna was named Third Star last week .

Wiebusch scored a powerplay goal in each game against the Buckeyes while adding a primary assist for a two-point effort in the series finale last Friday, his team-leading sixth multi-point game of the season.

Wiebusch has registered at least one point in nine of 10 games this season with goals in eight of those games including five-straight to tie his career-long goal streak set last season. The sophomore’s 11 goals pace the nation while his 18 points are tied with teammate Charlie Cerrato for the national lead.

The Verona, Wisconsin native is also tied for the national lead with six powerplay goals and three game-winning goals. His 11 career powerplay tallies are also tied with Dylan Richard ‘17 for the eighth-most all-time at Penn State.

His six man-advantage markers this season are currently tied for the third-most in a single-season at Penn State and Wiebusch is now just two PPG’s shy of Aiden Fink’s single-season record of eight achieved each of the past two seasons.
