Nittany Lions Blank Stanford to Close Out Journeymen Collegiate Duals

NASHVILLE, Tenn.  – The Penn State Nittany Lions (6-0, 0-0 B1G) rolled to their second shutout of the day, blanking Stanford (3-3) in the last of two duals at the 2025 Journeymen Collegiate Duals in Nashville, Tenn. Penn State posted the 42-0 victory over the Cardinal and finished off the event outscoring its two opponents 88-0.

The dual began at 125. Nittany Lion sophomore Luke Lilledahl, ranked No. 2 at 125, with a win over No. 12 Nicco Provo. Lilledahl turned a first period takedown into a 4-2 win for Penn State. True freshman Marcus Blaze, ranked No. 10 at 133, worked up a 16-2 lead on No. 6 Tyler Knox before pinning the Cardinal All-American at the 6:44 mark to give the Nittany Lions a 9-0 lead.

True freshman Nate Desmond, again wrestling up at 141, dominated Lain Lapoujian as he rolled to a 9-0 major decision with 3:34 in riding time. Junior Shayne Van Ness, ranked No. 1 at 149, used three takedowns to post a strong 10-4 win over No. 14 Aden Valencia. True freshman PJ Duke, ranked No. 8 at 157, notched the only takedown of the bout in a thrilling 5-2 win over No. 5 Danield Cardenas. Duke’s third period takedown was the difference and Penn State led 19-0 at the dual’s midway point.

Junior Mitchell Mesenbrink, ranked No. 1 at 165, picked up four takedowns before pinning EJ Parco in the second period, getting the fall at 4:23 to put Penn State up 25-0. Senior Levi Haines, ranked No. 1 at 174, used three takedowns and forced three stall warnings in a 14-4 major decision win over Lorenzo Norman. Sophomore Rocco Welsh, ranked No. 4 at 184, followed that up with a 5-1 win over Abraham Wojcikiewicz to give the Nittany Lions a 29-0 win.

Returning national finalist Josh Barr continued his first day of action at 197 for Penn State and continued to impress. Barr rolled up five takedowns and a turn to roll to a 19-3 tech fall over No. 19 Angelo Posada at the 4:13 mark. Redshirt freshman Cole Mirasola, ranked No. 13 at 285, put on an offensive clinic against Luke Duthie in the dual’s final bout. Mirasola tallied seven takedowns in the opening period to post a 21-6 tech fall at the 2:59 mark. The Nittany Lions finished off their second shutout victory of the day, posting the 42-0 win.

The Nittany Lions rolled up a 30-1 edge in takedowns (59-2 for the day) and tallied 12 bonus points off two pins (Blaze, Mesenbrink), two tech falls (Barr, Mirasola) and two majors (Desmond, Haines)  Penn State set a new NCAA Division I dual meet win streak record with the victory, having won its 77th-straight. The old mark was 76 set by Oklahoma St. from 1937 to 1951.

Penn State is now 6-0 on the year, 0-0 in the Big Ten. Stanford falls to 3-3. The Nittany Lions return to action on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2026, when they open up Big Ten action by hosting Rutgers. The Nittany Lions and Scarlet Knights battle at 4 p.m. in Rec Hall.

DUAL MEET BOUT-BY-BOUT:

 

125: Luke Lilledahl, ranked No. 2 at 125, battled No. 12 Nicco Provo. Lilledahl nearly scored off the opening whistle, but Provo was able to skip out of the Lions’ low shot to keep the bout scoreless. The duo battled evenly through the next minute-plus, maintaining position in the center of the mat. Lilledahl shot low on Provo, working the single into a scramble s the clock moved through the :45 mark. Lilledahl finished off the takedown to lead 3-0 at the :33 mark. Provo escaped to a 3-1 score and Lilledahl led by two after the opening period. Provo chose down to start the second period. Lilledahl maintained control through the 1:30 mark before Provo escaped to a 3-2 score. Lilledahl continued to shoot, forcing Provo into defense as the clock hit 1:00. The wrestlers finished the period on their feet and Lilledahl led 3-2 after two. Lilledahl chose down to start the third period and worked his way to a quick escape and a 4-2 lead. The Nittany Lion sophomore worked to set up his offense as the clock moved  into the bout’s final minute. Lilledahl fought off a solid Provo high single at the :45 mark. Lilledahl battled off the effort for the rest of the bout and walked away with a 4-2 win.

 

133: Marcus Blaze, ranked No. 10 at 133, met No. 6 Tyler Knox. Blaze set the tempo on offense from the start of the bout, forcing Knox backwards for the first half of the period. He continued to work Knox to the mat and picked up the first takedown of he bout at the 1:02 mark. Blaze was hit with a stall warning as he worked on top. Knox escaped to a 3-1 score on the restart. Blaze forced Knox backwards and forced a stall warning as the first period ended. Leading 3-1, Blaze chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 4-1 lead. Blaze pressured Knox backwards again as the Cardinal paced the outside circle. Blaze worked to engage Knox, but the Cardinal continued to pace outside as the lock hit :45. Blaze countered a slight Knox shot at the :40 mark and finished off a second takedown to open up a 7-1 lead with :23 left in the period. Knox chose top to start the third period. Blaze worked his way to his feet then moved in low for a reversal and a 9-2 lead after a quick Knox escape. Blaze turned a fast low shot into a fourth takedown to open up a 12-2 lead. Blaze cut Knox loose, took him down again late in the third period and worked the Cardinal to his back. Blaze pinned Knox at the 4:66 mark.

 

141: Nate Desmond faced Lain Lapoujian at 141. The duo worked in neutral through the first two minutes of the opening period. Desmond held his position in the center of the mat, working the Cardinal backwards as the clock moved to the :30 mark. Desmond fought off a Lapoujian counter with :28 on the clock, forcing a reset. The first period ended in a 0-0 tie. Lapoujian chose down to start the second period. Desmond controlled action on top, building up over 1:00 in riding time as he looked to turn Lapoujian. Desmond forced three stall warnings during the ride to take a 2-0 lead and then finished the period on top. Desmond led 2-0 with 2:00 in time after two. He chose down to start the third period and quickly escaped to a 3-0 lead. Desmond scored quickly from his feet to take a 6-0 lead with clinched riding time at the 1:30 mark. He continued to control Lapoujian on top, picked up two more points on another stall to lead 8-0, and finished on top. He added riding time and rolled to the 9-0 major decision.

 

149: Shayne Van Ness, ranked No. 1 at 149, battled No. 14 Aden Valencia. Van Ness chased Valencia to the outside circle over the first ninety second, taking a series of shots that forced the ranked Cardinal into defense. Van Ness shot Valencia out of bounds once more at :45. The match moved to the second period tied 0-0. Valencia chose down to start the second period and escaped to a 1-0 lead. The Cardinal shot low and Van Ness quickly countered the action, picking up a takedown to lead 3-2 after a quick Valencia escape. Van Ness added a second quick takedown to up his lead to 6-3 with another cut. Van Ness worked the center of the mat for the rest of the period and led by three after two. Van Ness chose down to start the third period and quickly escaped to a 7-3 lead. Van Ness connected on a high single, forcing a scramble through the 1:00 mark. Van Ness picked up the takedown and led 10-3 with :58 left in the period. Valencia escaped on the restart and Van Ness fought off a late Valencia shot as the period ended. Van Ness walked away with the 10-4 win.

 

157: PJ Duke, ranked No. 8 at 157, met No. 5 Daniel Cardenas. Duke worked Cardenas to the outside circle at 2:00, nearly working his offense to a takedown. But the Cardinal was able to defend the action and force a reset with 1:20 on the clock. Duke continued to hold position in the middle of the mat, forcing Cardenas into a first stall with :30 on the clock. Duke continued to pressure Cardenas to the outside circle as the first period ended tied 0-0. Duke chose down to start the second period. The Stanford junior maintained control of the Lion true freshman through the 1:03 mark when Cardenas forced Duke out of bounds and he got hit with a second stall to give Duke a 1-0 lead. Duke was able to escape at the :42 mark to take a 2-0 lead. Cardenas had 1:18 in riding time. Cardenas turned a high shot into a near takedown, but Duke countered, nearly scored himself, and the match moved to the third with Duke leading 2-0. Cardenas chose down to start the third and quickly escaped to a 2-1 score. Cardenas held 1:15 in riding time. Duke took a low shot and moved up to finish off the takedown, opening up a 5-1 lead with 1:18 on the clock. Cardenas escaped to a 5-2 score at 1:08 but Duke worked his riding time deficit down below 1:00. Duke skipped away from a fast low shot by Cardenas in the final :30 and held off the Cardinal down to the stretch to post the thrilling 5-2 win.

 

165: Mitchell Mesenbrink, ranked No. 1 at 165, wrestled EJ Parco. Mesenbrink scored quickly, taking Parco down in the opening seconds to lead 3-1 after cutting Parco loose. He added another takedown seconds later and led 6-1 with 2:07 on the clock. Parco escaped to a 6-2 score, Mesenbrink moved in on offense again and used a low single for a third takedown and a 9-2 lead. Mesenbrink finished the period on top, turned Parco once for four back points, and led 13-2 after one. Parco chose neutral to start the second period and Mesenbrink took the Cardinal wrestler down again to up his lead to 16-2. Mesenbrink then turned Parco to his back and picked up another fall, getting the pin at 4:23.

 

174: Levi Haines, ranked No. 1 at 174, took on Lorenzo Norman. Haines was patient on offense and eventually took a 3-1 lead with a takedown at the 1:20 mark, cutting Norman loose to return to work on his feet. Haines turned a high shot into a brief scramble and finished off the takedown with :20 left in the period to lead 6-1 after one. Haines chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 7-1 lead. Norman turned a low single into a scramble with 1:10 on the clock. Norman finished off the takedown at :46 to cut the Lion’s lead to 7-4. Haines escaped to an 8-4 lead with :20 on the clock, then moved in on offense and took Norman down a third time as the period ended to lead 11-4 after two. Norman chose down to start the third period. Haines went to work on top, forcing a first stall while building his riding time up over 1:00. Haines picked up a point on another stall warning and locked up his riding time point with :30 on the clock. Haines picked up another stall point and, with 2:00 in riding time, rolled to the 14-4 major.

 

184: Rocco Welsh, ranked No. 4 at 184, faced Abraham Wojcikiewicz. Welsh worked the Cardinal grappler backwards as the first period moved through the opening two minutes. The Nittany Lion sophomore turned a low single at the 1:00 mark into a takedown and a 3-0 lead with :48 left in the opening period. Welsh finished the period on top and led by that score after one period. Welsh chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 4-0 lead. Welsh dropped in on another shot at the 1:20 mark but Wojcikiewicz was able to move out of bounds to keep the score at 4-0. Welsh continued to shoot the Cardinal wrestler towards the outside circle as the period ended. Wojcikiewicz was able to kill the clock and Welsh led 4-0 after two. Wojcikiewicz chose down to start the third period and quickly escaped to a 4-1 score. Welsh was patient on offense as the Stanford wrestler played defense through the 1:00 mark. Welsh picked up a stall point at :31. He finished the period in neutral and posted the 5-1 victory.

 

197: Josh Barr, making his season debut at the collegiate duals, battled No. 19 Angelo Posada. Barr worked on his feet through the first minute and then moved in on a low shot for a takedown and a 3-0 lead with 2:06 on the clock. Barr maintained control of Posada for over a minute, looking to turn the Cardinal for back points. Posada was able to work his way out of bounds, forcing a reset with 1:00 on the clock. Posada escaped on the reset, cutting the Barr lead to 3-1. Barr blazed through another shot for a takedown and a 6-1 lead. He turned Posada to his back for four late nearfall points and led 10-1 after one. Posada chose neutral to start the second period and Barr quickly took him down a third time. Barr took Posada down twice more in quickly and posted the 19-3 tech fall at the 4:13 mark.

 

285: Cole Mirasola, ranked No. 13 at 285, met Luke Duthie. Mirasola came out hot on offense once again, taking Duthie down twice in the opening :40 to lead 6-2 early. He picked up a third takedown as the clock hit 1:58 and led 9-3 after cutting him loose. Mirasola turned a low shot into a fourth takedown to lead 12-4 after another cut with 1:08 left. Mirasola added three more takedowns in a furious flurry, then picked up a final one with just one second left. Mirasola’s seven takedowns led to a 21-6 tech fall at the 2:59 mark.
