ITHACA, N.Y. – The No. 4 Penn State women’s ice hockey team recorded their seventh ranked win of the season on Tuesday evening, defeating No. 12 Cornell 5-1 at Lynah Rink.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Just over the halfway mark of the first period, Katelyn Roberts forced a turnover in the Nittany Lions offensive zone and passed it to Tessa Janecke who picked the top left corner of the net to make it 1-0.
- Early in the second period, Cornell’s Pearson carried the puck into the zone and moved to the center of the ice and beat Katie DeSa to tie the game at one.
- 12 minutes into the second period, Maddy Christian received a pass from Taya MacDonald and curled over the top of the circle and shot it and it deflected off Grace Outwater and found its way into the Cornell net.
- Just over two minutes into the third period Katelyn Roberts carried the puck into the offensive zone and hit Tessa Janecke who quickly passed it across the crease to Abby Stonehouse who potted it in the open net.
- With six minutes to go, Kendall Butze intercepted a clearing attempt and passed it to Mckenna Walsh on the boards who made a cross-ice pass to a cutting Sophie Morrow who scored from the slot to extend the lead.
- Four minutes later with the Cornell net empty, Cornell mishandled a pass and Maddy Christian won the foot race to the loose puck and score on the empty net.
GOALTENDERS
- Penn State senior goaltender Katie DeSa 25 made saves in the win.
- Syracuse goaltender Annelies Bergmann made 25 saves in the loss.
STATS AND NOTES
- Penn State now has won seven wins over ranked opponents this season, improving upon their program high for a single season.
- The Nittany Lions also swept Cornell for the first time in program history.
- Five goals is tied for the most Cornell has allowed this season, and tied for the most Penn State has ever scored against the Big Red.
- Tessa Janecke extended her current point streak to six games.
- She also has goals in four straight games, and nine points total during the streak.
- The senior is now tied for sixth in the country in goals with 17.
- Grace Outwater has goals in her last three games, matching the longest streak of her career.
- Outwater tied Tessa Janecke for the most goals by a sophomore in program history.
- Katelyn Roberts tallied two assists for the second time this season and ninth in her career.
- Maddy Christian posted her fifth game this season with at least a goal and an assist and 14th of her career which is tied for the fourth most in Penn State history.
