Shaun Smith Tabbed Big Ten Freshman of the Week

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Penn State freshman Shaun Smith has been tabbed as the Big Ten’s Freshman of the Week. He mark’s PSU’s first rookie weekly honor since Luke Esparo was recognized in 2024.

Smith appears at his first West Point Open, where he helped Penn State win its 26th team title at the annual event. He scored a third-place tie in the vault with a score of 14.100 to lead the Nittany Lions and finished fourth in the floor exercise with a score of 12.850. The honor is the first conference recognition of his career.

Smith and Penn State are back on the road this weekend when the team travels to Sarasota, Florida, to compete at the Sam Mikulak Invitational. PSU will see foes from Big Ten opponent Illinois, Army, Evo Gymnastics, and other local clubs. Competition begins at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 24.
