UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The fifth-ranked Penn State Men’s Ice Hockey team unveiled a new sweater ahead of the outdoor game against No. 2 Michigan State at Westshore Home Field at Beaver Stadium on January 31, 2026. The Nittany Lions will battle the Spartans in a top-five conference clash at the historic venue with puck drop slated for 1 p.m.
The sweaters, to be worn only once as a part of Penn State Athletics’ Winter Weekend, are a nod to the iconic gridiron and its usual Saturday afternoon tenant, the Penn State Football team, while also drawing inspiration from the hockey program’s first varsity era.
The main cresting features twill Penn State text stitched across the chest in Helvetica Neue Bold Font to match the traditional typeface represented in the endzones at Beaver Stadium, while also mirroring uniforms worn by the 1941-1947 Nittany Lion hockey teams during their first varsity era. The white shoulder yoke of the sweater, as well as white pants, are also inspired by that era, with the pants featuring a solid blue stripe down each side, serving as a nod to the Generations of Greatness football uniforms.
The front collar of the sweater continues the GoG theme with the Nittany Lion Shrine appearing on the neck while the inside collar mimics the brown leather of a football, complete with white lacing, to complete the “Hanger effect” detail.
The sock and sleeve striping on these uniforms are also a nod to the GoG kits and feature the thin-thick-thin striping pattern as seen on the first-generation GoG football socks. The numbers on the sleeves as well as the back are enlarged for better stadium viewing, with the front and back numbers featuring a sublimated Beaver Stadium Blueprint pattern. Each number was cut from a different section of the pattern, making each numeral unique and tying into the stadium construction that has been an overarching visual identity for Penn State this year.
The Nittany Lions will forego their usual name bars on the back of the sweater, opting instead to honor their on-campus hosts and lean into the football mantra: “No Names, All Game”. The back of the sweater is completed with the standard lion head logo on the nape.
The Nittany Lions, who typically wear white for home games in Pegula Ice Arena, went with the navy sweater for this game as another stick tap to the Penn State football team which wears navy at home on Saturdays in the fall.
The uniforms are completed with the famed white helmet with a navy stripe down the middle, and standard blue gloves with a white cuff. The inside of each jersey also features a “game-worn wear tag” featuring the iconic Beaver Stadium Gate.
Following the game, these uniforms will be auctioned off with a portion of the proceeds being donated to the State College Coyotes Sled Hockey program. Further auction details to follow.
