No. 4 Nittany Lions Drop First Game of 2026 at No. 2 Buckeyes

Maddy Christian was the lone goal scorer for Penn State.

COLUMBUS,Ohio – The No. 4 Penn State women’s ice hockey team was handed its second loss of the season on Friday evening, falling to second-ranked Ohio State 5-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Four minutes into the game Ohio State took a 1-0 lead with an off angle shot by Sloane Matthews that got by Katie DeSa.
  • 16 seconds into the second period Joy Dunne scored to double Ohio State’s lead.
  • Three minutes later, OSU caught the Nittany Lions on a change and Maxine Cimoroni scored behind PSU’s defense.
  • Near the halfway mark of the second period, Ohio State’s Hilda Svensson went down shorthanded in transition and beat Katie DeSa to push the lead to 4-0.
  • 23 seconds later on the power play, Leah Stecker created a turnover in the neutral zone and found Maddy Christian going to the net and she scored on her backhand.
  • With just over five minutes to go in the second, OSU picked up a rebound in their defensive zone and went on the offensive, Maxine Cimoroni took a shot through traffic that found its way past Katie DeSa.

GOALTENDERS

  • Senior goaltender Katie DeSa made 28 saves and allowed five goals in the first two periods. Freshman goaltender Maddy Campbell started the third period, making 12 saves.
  • Ohio State goaltender Hailey Macleod made 23 saves while allowing one goal.

STATS AND NOTES

  • Maddy Christian has a point in her last three games after scoring the lone goal for PSU.
  • Leah Stecker picked up her eighth assist of the season.
  • Matilde Fantin picked her second point in as many games with an assist on Christian’s goal.
  • PSU falls to 2-10-1 against the Buckeyes in the head-to-head record.
  • Five goals is the most Penn State has given up this season.
