UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The No. 4 Penn State women’s ice hockey team rallied from a two-goal second period deficit to defeat Robert Morris 5-2 Saturday night at Pegula Ice Arena.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Halfway through the first period, Robert Morris’ Taylor Storey forced a turnover in her own defensive zone, leading to a breakaway that she capitalized on giving the Colonials an early lead.
- 14 seconds into the second period, Robert Morris’ Jessica MacKinnon stole the puck in the offensive zone, centering it for Rowyn Ringor who scored point-blank, giving the visitors a two-goal advantage.
- Less than 20 seconds later, Penn State’s Danica Maynard fed it to Taya MacDonald, who then found Grace Outwater as she evaded a defender down the right side and placed a puck top shelf to cut the deficit to one.
- Two and a half minutes into the second, Penn State’s Mya Vaslet won a puck off the boards in the offensive zone, shoveling it across to an open Abby Stonehouse who notched the equalizer.
- After a ricochet at center-ice was forced by a Maddy Christian poke check, Grace Outwater pushed it ahead to McKenna Walsh, who was left all alone as she stuffed a backhand shot into the back of the net to give Penn State their first lead of the game.
- Penn State converted on the powerplay with five minutes left in the second period, as Mya Vaslet pushed it to Kendall Butze and then to Danica Maynard, who spun off a closing defender and tucked it inside the left post.
- With 8:47 remaining, Kendall Butze fired a shot that was initially stopped but trickled through the goalie, as Katelyn Roberts was there for the rebound attempt to smash it home.
GOALTENDERS
- Penn State senior goaltender Katie DeSa made 20 saves and earned the win.
- Robert Morris goaltender Maggie Hatch made 23 saves. Lucy Phillips made six saves in relief.
