ERIE, Pa. – The No. 4 Penn State women’s ice hockey team got back in the win column on Friday afternoon, defeating Mercyhurst 3-0 at Mercyhurst Ice Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Just under six minutes into the second period, Tessa Janecke won a puck battle on the boards and found Nicole Hall in the slot who fired a shot to the top right corner to give Penn State a 1-0 lead.
- Early in the third period, Nicole Hall made a wraparound attempt and ended up passing it to Taya MacDonald who was alone in front and she jammed it home to double the Nittany Lion lead.
- With under three minutes to go, Tessa Janecke curled below the goal line and behind the net before feeding Danica Maynard through the slot and she fired a shot top left corner to push the lead to three.
GOALTENDERS
- Penn State freshman goaltender Maddy Campbell made 27 saves for her third shutout of the season.
- Mercyhurst goaltender Magdalena Luggin made 26 saves in the loss.
STATS AND NOTES
- Maddy Campbell’s third shutout of the season ties her for the Penn State freshman record.
- Her 27 saves were the second most she’s made in a game this season.
- Nicole Hall notched her third multi-point game of the season and fourth of her career.
- Tessa Janecke had an assist, posting a point in her second straight game.
- Janecke now has 22 career games with at least two assists, the most by a Nittany Lion ever.
- She is now up to 30 points on the season, good for eighth nationally.
- Danica Maynard now has 21 points, leading all freshman for Penn State and all defenders.
