Penn State Fencing Completes Temple Invitational

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State fencing finished the Temple Invitational on Sunday, February 22 in Philadelphia. The invitational marks the last regular season away meet of the season.

  1. 14 TEMPLE UNIVERSITY

In the first round of competition, the women’s team lost to Temple 21-6.

Samantha Catantan won the only bout for the women’s foil team as they were defeated 8-1.

Sophia Abashidze fenced 2-1 against the No. 14 ranked Temple with an additional win from Yuna Tamura as Penn State women’s epee lost 6-3.

For the women’s saber team, Eve Scott and Stephanie Jen each one a bout in a 7-2 loss.

JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY

During the second round of competition against John’s Hopkins University, the men’s team took an 18-9 win as the women lost with a final score of 18-9.

The men’s foil fenced to a perfect 9-0 win against the Blue Jays. Tit Nam Cheng, Spencer Burke and Julian Chin all fenced undefeated for the Nittany Lions.

On the women’s side, Catantan fenced undefeated for Penn State with another win from Eden De La Cruz in a 5-4 loss in foil.

The men’s epee team got a close 5-4 win over the Blue Jays. Mohamed Yassin fenced undefeated with a 2-1 performance from Zachary Suico to take the round against John’s Hopkins.

On the women’s side, Tamura fenced 2-1 with an additional win from Abashidze in a 6-3 loss in epee.

Neil Lilov fenced to a 2-1 performance over the Blue Jays for the men’s saber team with a win from both Carlos Fernando Chacon and Michael Nil in a close 5-4 loss.

Jen added two more wins onto her total for the day in a 7-2 loss in women’s saber.

UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA

The Penn State men’s team lost 22-5 and the women’s team lost 16-11 to the University of Pennsylvania during the third round of the Temple Invitational.

Yaroslav Muruhin and Matthew Gonzalez each won a bout in a 7-2 loss in men’s foil.

The women’s foil team won 8-1 against UPenn. Catantan fenced undefeated for the second time on the day along with Thea Fernandes, who also fenced undefeated with additional wins from De La Cruz and Clarisse Tan.

Suico fenced to a 2-1 performance against Upenn for the men’s foil team with an additional win from Yassin in a 6-3 loss in the men’s epee round.

Tamura secured the only win for the Nittany Lions in the women’s epee round.

Carlos Fernando Chacon and Nil each earned a win in a 7-2 loss for the men’s saber team.

Eunyu Kim fenced 2-1 with an additional win from Mia Novick in a 6-3 loss to Upenn for the women’s saber squad.

STEVENS UNIVERSITY

The Penn State men’s fencing team took a dominant 20-7 win over Stevens University.

The men’s foil team won 6-3 against Stevens University. Muruhin, Cheng and Burke each fenced 2-1 in the win.

For the men’s epee team, Suico fenced undefeated with a 2-1 performance from Joshua Yavorovskiy and an additional win from Sebastian Bonomo in a 6-3 win over Stevens.

The Nittany Lions took an 8-1 win in men’s saber. Lilov and Chacon each fenced undefeated with 2 additional wins from Nil.
