NASSAU, Bahamas – The Penn State baseball team fell 8-5 against Indiana State on Friday evening at Andre Rodgers National Baseball Stadium. The Sycamores took the first game of the Atlantis Collegiate Baseball Series, breaking the game open with four runs in the ninth. Indiana State improved to 5-5 overall, while PSU fell to 2-5.
Colin Fitzgerald made his third start of the season for the Nittany Lions. The redshirt senior fired six innings, tallying a career-high-tying 10 strikeouts. He allowed four runs on six hits and walked one batter. Fitzgerald secured two strikeouts in the third, three in the fourth, two in the fifth and two in the sixth.
Fitzgerald became the first Nittany Lion with 10+ strikeouts in a game since Travis Luensmann (10) against Indiana on April 1, 2023
Kyle Emmons worked two scoreless frames, giving up one hit, and struck out one batter. Dimond Loosli went one inning, giving up four runs (all unearned) on three hits. He had one strikeout.
Grant Parson got the start for Indiana State. He went 1.1 frames, allowing three runs on three hits. He tallied one strikeout and one walk. Jack Armstrong tossed 4.2 scoreless innings. He gave up no hits and three walks, while recording seven strikeouts. Ryan Karst threw 2.1 innings, giving up two runs on two hits. Hunter Small picked up the safe, recording the final two outs of the ninth.
Penn State tallied five runs on six hits. Michael Anderson launched a two-run homer and scored twice. Jayden Davis registered two hits, including an RBI double. Bryce Molinaro contributed an RBI double.
Indiana State collected eight runs on 10 hits. Nick Sutherlin notched three hits, including a double, two runs and an RBI. Caden Miller added two hits, with an RBI single, and two runs. Jeremy Martinez had a two-run double. Andrew Ortiz secured two hits and two RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Indiana State got on the board in the first. Ortiz led off the game with a single to center. He moved to second on a single by Emil Estrella before moving to third on a wild pitch. A sac fly to center by Sutherlin drove in Ortiz. The Sycamores led 1-0.
The Nittany Lions answered in the bottom half of the first. With one out, Anderson was hit by a pitch. Molinaro ripped a double off the wall in right-center as Anderson hustled home. Davis followed with a double down the left field line to drive in Molinaro. On a wild pitch back to the backstop, Davis hustled home from second to extend the PSU lead to 3-1,
Indiana State re-took the lead in the fourth. With one out, Carter Beck worked a walk. Sutherlin singled to put runners at first and second. Miller bounced a single through the left side to drive in Beck. Two batters later, Martinez lined a double to right to plate Sutherlin and Miller. The Sycamores held a 4-3 lead.
The Sycamores added four runs in the ninth, helped by an error. Sutherlin and Miller reached on singles to begin the frame. A groundout moved the runners to second and third before an intentional walk loaded the bases. Two batters later, a grounder to the right side by Sebastian Torres resulted in a throwing error to allow two runs to score. Ortiz followed with a single to right to drive in two. Indiana State led 8-3.
In the bottom of the ninth, Cohl Mercado recorded a one-out single. Anderson hammered a 3-2 pitch over the wall in left to cut the PSU deficit to 8-5. Two batters later, Davis singled to right. He moved up to second on defensive indifference. Jack Porter hit a deep fly ball to center but it was caught to end the game.
