NASSAU, Bahamas – The Penn State baseball team dropped a 2-1 decision against Indiana State on Saturday afternoon at Andre Rodgers National Baseball Stadium. PSU fell in the second game of the Atlantis Collegiate Baseball Series after the Sycamores plated the go-ahead run in the eighth, spoiling a strong performance by Ben Hudson.
PSU dropped to 2-6 on the season, while Indiana State moved to 6-5.
Ben Hudson got the start on the mound for the Nittany Lions, firing a career-high 7.2 innings. He was charged with two runs on six hits. He secured a career-high seven strikeouts and allowed one walk. Hudson held ISU scoreless through the first 3.2 frames and had multiple strikeouts in the fifth and seventh innings.
Ben DeMell recorded the final out of the eighth but allowed a hit that resulted in the go-ahead run.
Ty Brooks made the start for Indiana State, tossing seven innings. He allowed one run on three hits. Brooks tallied eight strikeouts and one walk. Colby Morse worked one inning, allowing a hit and two walks but no runs. Justin Hoff picked up the save with a scoreless ninth.
Penn State recorded one run on four hits. Spencer Barnett launched his third homer of the season among two hits. Bryce Molinaro and Avery Smith each contributed a single.
Indiana State secured two runs on seven hits. Carter Beck doubled and scored two runs. Nick Sutherlin added two hits, including an RBI double. Caden Miller contributed an RBI single.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Indiana State broke up a scoreless tie in the fourth. With one out, Beck worked a walk. He moved up to second on a steal before scoring on a single to right by Miller. The Sycamores led 1-0.
The Nittany Lions responded quickly in the fifth. Barnett blasted the first pitch he saw over the wall in left. The opposite field homer evened the game at 1-1.
Indiana State took the lead in the bottom of the eighth. With two outs, Beck lined a double to right-center. After a pitching change, Sutherlin snuck a line drive inside the left-field line for a double as Beck came around to score. The Sycamores went ahead, 2-1.
In the top of the ninth, Molinaro worked a four-pitch walk. Jayden Davis held off on a 3-2 pitch for a walk to put runners on first and second. A grounder to shortstop resulted in a doubleplay and Molinaro on third. However, a groundout to second ended the game.
