UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Vicente Villanueva has won Big Ten Freshman of the Week following multiple strong performances in men’s swimming and diving victories this past weekend against West Virginia and George Washington.
The freshman swimmer recorded three individual event wins across both meets, including a victory in the 200 breast (1:56.60) against West Virginia. He followed that performance by sweeping the 100 and 200 breast against George Washington, where he swam a 54.02 and 1:58.92, respectively. Villanueva also contributed to Penn State’s victory in the 200 medley relay against George Washington, posting a 24.07 split in the 50 breast.
Villanueva’s performance this weekend propelled the Nittany Lions to victories in both dual meets. This honor marks a promising start to Villanueva’s young career at Penn State.
The Men’s Swimming and Diving team is set to travel to Madison, Wis. from Feb. 25-28 for the Big Ten Swimming and Diving Championships.
