Baseball Earns Extra-Inning Win Over Indiana State

Nittany Lions walk it off in the 11th

NASSAU, Bahamas – Penn State tied the game in the ninth and won it in the 11th in a 9-8 victory over Indiana State on Sunday at Andre Rodgers National Baseball Stadium. The Nittany Lions took the last game of the Atlantis Collegiate Baseball Series. Michael Anderson, Jayden Davis and Bryce Molinaro all homered in the win.

 

Penn State improved to 3-6 on the season, while Indiana State dropped to 6-6.

 

In the bottom of the 11th, Jesse Jaconski roped a leadoff double to right-center. A bunt by Joey DeMucci found its way through the left side for a single to move Jaconski to third. Preston Yaucher was intentionally walked to load the bases. Cohl Mercado chopped a grounder to short as Jaconski slid home safe with the help of a wide throw.

 

Isaiah Shayter made his third start of the season for the Nittany Lions, working 2.2 innings. He allowed four runs on four hits and three walks. Shayter recorded three strikeouts.

 

Mason Horwat worked 1.2 innings, allowing two runs on two hits, and struck out three. Kyle Emmons fired 1.2 scoreless frames, giving up two hits and striking out two. Ben DeMell allowed two runs on two hits in one inning.

 

Dimond Loosli worked a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and a walk. Michael Anderson went two-thirds of a scoreless inning including one strikeout. Matthew VanOstenbridge worked 1.1 shutout frames and struck out one. Frankie Sanchez fired a shutout inning in the 11th to pick up the win.

 

Owen Roberts earned the start for Indiana State, throwing 3.2 innings. He gave up one run on three hits. Roberts had two strikeouts and one walk. Spencer Johnsen threw one inning, allowing three runs on four hits. Jacob Spencer worked 1.1 innings, giving up one run on three hits. Justin Hoff threw two innings, surrendering a run. Carson Seeman tossed one inning, allowing a run. Hunter Small allowed an unearned run in one inning, giving up two hits and three walks.

 

Penn State collected nine runs on 15 hits. Michael Anderson and Jayden Davis tallied two hits and a homer. Davis added a single and a sac fly. Bryce Molinaro added a solo homer. Jesse Jaconski recorded three hits, including a double, an RBI and scored twice. Yaucher contributed two hits and two RBI.

 

Indiana State tallied eight runs on 11 hits. Mason Roell notched two hits, three RBI and a homer. Caden Miller contributed two hits and two RBI, while Emil Estrella had an RBI double and two runs.

Indiana State got on the board in the third. Ray Jesse worked a leadoff walk before Caleb Niehaus reached on a single. On a dropped third strike, Jesse advanced to third. A double to right-center by Emil Estrella plated Jesse and moved Niehaus to third. A sac fly by Carter Beck drove in Niehaus. After a walk by Sutherlin, a single by Caden Miller brought in Estrella. ISU added another run on a single by Mason Roell, scoring Sutherlin.

 

Penn State answered in the bottom of the third. With one out, Michael Anderson hammered the first pitch he saw off the scoreboard in left-center. PSU trailed 4-1.

 

The Nittany Lions added a run in the fourth. With two outs, Jesse Jaconski and Avery Smith reached on back-to-back errors, resulting in runners on the corners. Preston Yaucher chopped a single to the left side to bring in Jaconski and cut the PSU deficit to 4-2.

 

Indiana State responded with two runs in the fifth. Estrella led off the inning with a single to left. A single by Beck put runners on the corners. A wild pitch allowed Estrella to score. A double off the wall by Sutherlin brought in Beck to push the Sycamores’ lead to 6-2.

 

The Nittany Lions answered in the bottom of the fifth. Leading off the inning, Bryce Molinaro blasted a 2-1 pitch over the wall in right-center. Jayden Davis followed with a single to center. Jack Porter sent a double down the left-field line to put runners on second and third. A sac fly by Kevin Karstetter allowed Davis to score. Jesse Jaconski’s foul pop out to right resulted in a sac fly as Porter scored. Penn State cut its deficit to 6-5.

 

The Sycamores tallied two runs in the seventh. With one out, Sutherlin lined a double to left. Two batters later, a high fly ball by Roell landed on the warning track as Sutherlin scored and Roell hustled home for an inside-the-park home run. Indiana State led 8-5.

 

The Nittany Lions got a run back in the bottom half. Leading off the frame, Jayden Davis sent a line drive over the wall in right. PSU trimmed its deficit to 8-6.

 

Penn State chipped away in the eighth. Cohl Mercado was hit by a pitch to begin the inning. Anderson singled through the left side to put runners on first and second. Mercado moved up to third on a flyout to right before scoring on a sac fly by Davis. PSU trailed 8-7.

 

The Nittany Lions tied the game in the ninth. Karstetter sent a double off the wall in left-center to leadoff the frame. A groundout by Jaconski moved Karstetter to third. Two batters later, Preston Yaucher bounced a single through the middle to plate Karstetter and even the game at 8-8.

 

UP NEXT

Penn State hosts St. John’s for a pair of midweek contests. PSU is set for its home opener at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday’s matchup is set for 4 p.m.

 

Next weekend, the Nittany Lions travel to Lubbock, Texas for a three-game series at Texas Tech.
