TYSONS, Va. – The Penn State baseball team dropped an 8-2 decision at Georgetown on Tuesday afternoon at Capital One Park. After a Nittany Lion run in the top of the third, the Hoyas answered with four runs to jump out to an early lead.
Penn State fell to 4-10 overall, while Georgetown improved to 11-6.
Frankie Sanchez made the start on the mound for the Nittany Lions, working 2.2 innings. He allowed four runs on three hits. Sanchez notched one strikeout and three walks. Matthew VanOstenbridge tossed two-thirds of an inning, giving up two runs (unearned) on two hits. He walked two and struck out two.
Ben DeMell fired 2.2 scoreless frames. He gave up one hit and recorded one strikeout. Logan Olson allowed two runs while facing three batters. Braden Leed threw one inning, striking out one and walking two. Skip Shenosky threw one scoreless inning, surrendering two hits and a walk and striking out one.
Charlie Hendrix got the start for Georgetown, going three innings. He gave up one run on two hits and recorded three strikeouts. Andre Citron threw a scoreless inning and struck out two. Max Whitmer went two innings, allowing one run on three hits and striking out two. Will Newell went one-third of an inning, giving up a walk and striking out one. Marshall Whitmer went two-thirds of a scoreless inning. Jack Volo pitched a scoreless eighth including two strikeouts. Ethan Rucker tossed a scoreless ninth.
Penn State recorded two runs on five hits. Bryce Molinaro launched a solo homer. Cohl Mercado drove in a run, while Preston Yaucher tripled and scored.
Georgetown tallied eight runs on eight hits and 10 walks. Ashtin Gilio collected to hits, including a two-run homer, and three RBI. Christian Hamilton posted three hits and two RBI, while Connor Peek doubled and drove in a run.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Nittany Lions got on the board in the third. Leading off the inning, Preston Yaucher sent a line drive off the wall in center and hustled to third for a triple. A grounder by Cohl Mercado allowed Yaucher to cross the plate. Penn State led 1-0.
Georgetown responded in the bottom of the third. With one out, AJ Solomon worked a walk. Ashtin Gilio lifted a 1-0 pitch over the wall in center for a two-run homer. Travis Illitch drew a walk before Connor Peek doubled to the right-center gap to put runners on second and third. Christian Hamilton sent a single through the left side to bring in both runners. Georgetown led 4-1.
The Hoyas added two runs in the fourth. Dylan Larkins worked a leadoff walk. He moved up to second on a steal and third on an error. Solomon drew a walk with ball four resulting in a wild pitch as Larkins scored. Gilio reached on an error before a bunt single by Illitch loaded the bases. A grounder by Connor Peek resulted in an error as Solomon scored. Georgetown pushed its lead to 6-1.
The Nittany Lions got a run back in the sixth. With one out, Bryce Molinaro launched a 2-2 pitch over the wall in left-center. Molinaro’s third homer of the year cut PSU’s deficit to 6-2.
Georgetown added two runs in the seventh. Jeremy Sheffield and Hamilton walked and Braxton Templin was hit by a pitch to load the bases. A sac fly by Larkins brought in Sheffield. Back-to-back walks by Solomon and Gilio allowed Hamilton to score. The Hoyas held an 8-2 advantage.
