ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – Freshman Jackson Saroney paced Penn State with a 5-under, 211, at The Johnnie-O at Sea Island hosted by Rutgers University this week.

Saroney’s 5-under is his collegiate low score relative to par as he fired red figures each round opening with a 3-under, 69, before closing with back-to-back 71’s. Saroney enjoyed the back-nine at the Plantation Course this week going a combined 7-under on holes 10 through 18 this week including a bogey-free 7-under during the first and second rounds on Monday.

The rookie finished the week tied for 33rd in the 84-player field.

As a team, the Nittany Lions finished the week tied for 13th in the 15-team field at 9-under, 855, highlighted by an 8-under opening round. Georgia Southern earned the crown with a tie-breaker victory over Florida Gulf Coast after each team finished the week 42-under, while Minnesota and Kansas tied for third just three strokes back at 39-under and NC State rounded out the top-5 at 37-under.

Alex Creamean and Andres Barraza each finished the week tied for 49th at 1-under as Creamean shook off an opening round 1-over, 73, with back-to-back rounds of 1-under to close the tournament. Barraza shined in the opening round with a 3-under, 69, before back-to-back 73’s to end the week.

Will Preston also had an impressive opening round carding a season-low 2-under, 70, and concluded the week tied for 58th at 1-over following an even-par, 72, and a 3-over, 75, in Tuesday’s final round.

Tim Peters rounded out the group tied for 64th at 3-over, 219.

The Nittany Lions have a quick turnaround as they are right back in action at the Seminole Intercollegiate beginning next Sunday through Tuesday.
