TYSONS, Va. – The Penn State baseball team fell 5-4 against Georgetown on Wednesday afternoon at Capital One Park. Michael Anderson, Spencer Barnett and Bryce Molinaro all homered in the contest. The game was tied going into the eighth, but the Hoyas took the lead on a solo homer.
Georgetown improved to 12-6 this season, while Penn State dropped to 4-11.
Ethan Bauerschmidt made his first career start for the Nittany Lions, tossing four innings. He gave up four runs (three earned) on five hits. Bauerschmidt registered three strikeouts and one walk.
Braden Leed worked a scoreless fifth and struck out one. Logan Olson threw one-third of an inning, striking out one and giving up a hit and a walk. Kyle Emmons recorded the final two outs of the sixth, including a strikeout. Robert Brown III threw two innings, allowing a run on two hits.
JT Raab earned the start for Georgetown, going three innings. He allowed three runs on four hits. Raab tallied three strikeouts and a walk. Ashton Arroyo worked two-thirds of an inning, giving up one run on two hits. Andrew Jergins fired 1.1 shutout frames, giving up one hit and striking out one. Griffin O’Connor tossed three scoreless innings, allowing two hits and a walk, while recording two strikeouts. Ethan Rucker worked a scoreless ninth and struck out two.
Penn State scored four runs on nine hits, including three homers. Michael Anderson collected two hits, including a solo homer. Spencer Barnett and Bryce Molinaro added solo homers, while Jayden Davis recorded three hits, including a double, and scored a run. Preston Yaucher contributed an RBI single.
Georgetown tallied five runs on eight hits. Dante Pozzi drove in three runs with two homers. Christian Hamilton added two hits and an RBI. Travis Illitch had two hits and scored a run.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hoyas took an early lead in the first. Ashtin Gilio snuck a grounder inside the first base bag and hustled to third. Two batters later, Connor Peek lifted a sac fly to center to bring in Gilio. Georgetown led 1-0.
Penn State answered in the second. Leading off the inning, Bryce Molinaro blasted a 1-2 pitch over the wall in right. The game was even at 1-1.
The Nittany Lions took the lead in the third. With one out, Michael Anderson crushed a 2-1 pitch over the batter’s eye for his seventh homer of the year. Spencer Barnett made it back-to-back homers, blasting a 1-2 pitch over the wall in right-center. Penn State held a 3-1 advantage.
Georgetown responded with a run in the bottom of the third. With one out, Travis Illitch sent a single to right. After Peek was hit by a pitch, Jeremy Sheffield reached on an error to load the bases. Christian Hamilton beat out a fielder’s choice to allow Illitch to score. PSU still led 3-2.
The Nittany Lions added a run in the fourth. Jayden Davis reached on a bunt single to begin the frame. Jesse Jaconski was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Preston Yaucher dribbled a single through the middle to bring in Davis. Penn State pushed its lead to 4-2.
Georgetown tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. Connor Price worked a leadoff walk. A sac bunt moved Price to second. Dante Pozzi lifted a fly ball over the wall in left. The two-run homer evened the game at 4-4.
The Hoyas took the lead in the eighth. With two outs, Pozzi launched an 0-1 pitch over the wall in left. The solo homer put Georgetown ahead, 5-4.

PSU returns to Happy Valley on March 13-15 as it hosts Iowa for its Big Ten-opening series. Friday’s contest is set for 5:30 p.m., while Saturday is a 2 p.m. first pitch and Sunday is set for 1 p.m. All games will be streamed on B1G+.
