Nittany Lions Fall to Northwestern in B1G Tournament

Penn State drops 76-66 decision to Northwestern in opening round of B1G Tournament from Chicago

CHICAGO – The Penn State men’s basketball team dropped its opening round matchup at the 2026 TIAA Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament on Tuesday night, falling in 76-66 fashion to the Northwestern Wildcats inside the United Center.

Freshman forward Ivan Jurić mustered one of the most statistically significant performances of his collegiate career to date in his postseason debut, dropping a career-high 22 points on the Wildcats in the losing effort. Jurić, a native of Zagreb, Croatia, connected on nine of his 12 field goal attempts and added six rebounds as well as three assists to his final line. Redshirt junior guard Freddie Dilione V poured in 14 points and four assists, senior forward Josh Reed logged 14 points of his own, and freshman guard Kayden Mingo tallied 13 points with a team-high five assists to round out the quartet of Penn State student-athletes in double figures from the United Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Nittany Lions came away with the opening tip and immediately booked the game’s first points with a paint basket down low from Jurić. Defense turned to offense moments later, with Mingo able to find Reed for a mid-range jumper that gave the Blue & White a four-point edge. Northwestern rattled off an 8-0 scoring run from there, but Jurić hit a triple to make it a one-point affair at the first media intermission.
  • Jurić continued to be a menace on both ends of the floor through the early going, keeping the Nittany Lions within striking distance by reaching double figures in the first five minutes of the contest. An and-one bucket from the PSU big man tied things up at 12-all, but NU rattled off a 6-0 stretch to pull back in front.
  • Dilione V managed to deadlock the game once again at 21-apiece with a 3-pointer and a step-back jumper from mid-range by the 9:00 mark, but Northwestern managed to separate itself by a four-point margin from there. Baskets fell both directions, but a triple from Tunca and a transition and-one basket from Reed gave the Nittany Lions their first lead of the game in over 14 minutes, 29-26, at the 4:26 mark.
  • Northwestern managed to rattle off a 6-0 scoring run following Reed’s and-one free throw, but a triple from Mingo saw the game knotted up once more at 32-32. NU tallied a transition bucket inside the final minute of action, and Penn State was unable to score on its final possession of the first half, culminating in a 34-32 Wildcat edge through 20 minutes of work.
  • Despite an early bucket from NU as the second half got underway, Mingo was able to seize a bit of momentum for the Blue & White with an and-one bucket off a Wildcat giveaway. Each squad traded makes from 3-point range, but an and-one from Northwestern made it a four-point NU lead.
  • Jurić halted a 6-0 Wildcat scoring run with a physical bucket in the painted area, but Northwestern worked its lead up to its largest point at the 15:05 mark, notching a 47-40 edge. Mingo maneuvered around a Wildcat defender and found the bottom of the net with an and-one bucket at the 14:39 mark, and Jurić drilled a pair of free throws with 13:11 to go to make it a four-point contest.
  • PSU answered a Wildcat triple with a layup down low prior to a media timeout, but the Wildcats were able to push the lead back up to seven points. Jurić and Reed managed to record baskets as the game fell below 10 minutes remaining, but Northwestern managed to keep its seven-point edge as the half wore on. Mingo earned a trip to the free throw line with 8:06 to go and connected on both chances, culminating in a 60-55 NU score at the under-eight media break.
  • Northwestern went on an 8-0 scoring run over the next five minutes, leading by as many as 13 with less than four minutes to go. Penn State battled for opportunities as the game came to a close, but the Wildcats ultimately came away with a 76-66 win over PSU on Tuesday.
