Penn State Men’s Fencing Team Finishes Day One of NCAA National Fencing Championships

The Nittany Lions finish day three of the National Fencing Championships

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State men’s fencing team began the first day of competition at the NCAA National Fencing Championships in South Bend, In. at the University of Notre Dame.   

MEN’S EPEE  

Representing the men’s epee team is senior Tingwei Xu. Xu recorded two victories in the first round of pool play, scoring 20 touches with both victories being 5-touch win bouts. 

In the next round of pool play, Xu earned one victory after recording 12 touches.  

Xu went 3-1 in the last round of pool play on day one of the competition, scoring 17 touches with multiple 5-touch wins.  

MEN’S FOIL  

Two Nittany Lions fenced foil on for the men’s team, junior Spencer Burke and junior Tit Nam Cheng. Both Burke and Cheng finished the first round of pool play with 4-3 records, each recording 28 touches. Each win for Burke and Cheng was secured by 5-touch bout wins.  

During round two of pool play, Burke earned an additional win while recording 11 touches. Cheng fenced 2-2 in the second round, recording 12 touches. 

Both Burke and Cheng earned one win in the last round of pool play. Burke recorded 9 touches while Cheng recorded 13.  

MEN’S SABER 

Senior Neil Lilov represents the Penn State men’s saber team throughout the National Championships. Lilov completed the first round of pool play by earning 3 wins off 20 touches and multiple 5-touch bout wins. 

Lilov didn’t earn any wins in the second round of pool play but recorded a 3-1 record in the third round of pool play, scoring 21 touches.  

NEXT UP 

The Penn State men’s team will finish competition at the NCAA National Fencing Championships on Sunday, March 22 in South Bend, In. at the University of Notre Dame. Competition begins at 9 a.m. with men’s foil.
