Nittany Lions travel to take on Georgetown on Tuesday and Wednesday

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Penn State baseball team dropped a 14-4 decision in seven innings at Texas Tech on Sunday afternoon at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park. The Nittany Lions  brought the game within one, 4-5, in the fifth, but Texas Tech responded with four runs in the sixth and five in the seventh.

 

Penn State dropped to 4-9 overall, while Texas Tech improved to 10-4.

 

Isaiah Shayter earned the start for the Nittany Lions, working 1.2 innings. He allowed five runs on four hits, while striking out one and walking five. Kyle Emmons fired three shutout innings. He gave up one hit and one walk, while securing one strikeout.

 

Dimond Loosli went two-thirds of an inning, giving up four runs on three hits. Mason Horwat threw two-thirds of an inning, allowing three runs on one hit and two walks. Ben DeMell gave up two runs over one-third of an inning.

 

Jonny Lowe got the start for Texas Tech, going 2.1 innings. He gave up two runs on three hits. Lowe recorded three strikeouts and two walks. Heerun Han worked two-thirds of an inning and struck out one. Kaysen Raineri gave up two runs on two hits over 1.2 frames. Will Jordan gave up two hits over 1.1 innings. Logan Bevis worked a scoreless seventh.

 

Penn State tallied four runs on seven hits. Michael Anderson had a two-run single, while Preston Yaucher collected two hits, including a double, and scored twice. Jack Porter doubled and scored.

 

Texas Tech collected 14 runs on 13 hits. Connor Shouse recorded four hits, including a double and a triple, three RBI and two runs. Linkin Garcia drove in three runs and scored twice. Caden Ferraro added three hits, including two doubles, and two RBI.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Red Raiders took an early lead. With one out in the first, Tracer Lopez worked a five-pitch walk. Connor Shouse landed a soft line drive in right and hustled to second for a double to put runners on second and third. Logan Hughes followed with a double to right to bring in Lopez and Shouse. Texas Tech led 2-0.

 

Texas Tech added three runs in the second. After Davis Rivers drew a walk and Robin Villeneuve singled to left-center, Kyeler Thompson reached on an infield single to allow Rivers to score. A sac bunt moved Villeneuve to third and Thompson to second before a fielder’s choice by Shouse brought in Villeneuve. Two batters later, a line drive by Linkin Garcia went off Shayter’s ankle and over to first, but allowed Thompson to cross the plate. The Red Raiders held a 5-0 lead.

 

The Nittany Lions chipped away in the third. Justin Turcovski worked a leadoff walk. Two batters later, Preston Yaucher reached on an infield single. Cohl Mercado held off on a 3-2 pitch for a walk to load the bases. Michael Anderson ripped a single through the middle to plate pinch-runner Maddox McDonald and Yaucher. PSU trailed 5-2.

 

Penn State added a run in the fourth. Jack Porter lined a leadoff double to left-center. He moved to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a grounder to the right side by Jesse Jaconski. The Nittany Lions trimmed their deficit to 5-3.

 

The Nittany Lions plated a run in the fifth. Yaucher snuck a grounder inside the third base bag and raced to second for a double. A grounder by Anderson moved Yaucher to third. Bryce Molinaro smacked a single into left to bring in Yaucher. PSU trailed 5-4.

 

Texas Tech responded with four runs in the bottom half of the fifth. With one out, Lopez drew a walk. A single by Shouse and a walk by Hughes loaded the bases. Garcia sent a single through the left side to drive in Lopez and Shouse. A double off the wall in right by Caden Ferraro drove in Hughes. A groundout by Matt Quintanar allowed Garcia to score. Texas Tech pushed its lead to 9-4.

 

In the seventh, Thompson was hit by a pitch and Lopez walked to start the frame. Shouse lined a triple to right-center to bring in both runners. After a walk by Garcia, a single by Ferraro drove in pinch-runner Coleman Ryan. Two batters later, Rivers sent a single into right to drive in Garcia and pinch-runner Jace Souza to end the game, 14-4.

 

UP NEXT

Penn State continues its Spring Break trip with two games at Georgetown on Tuesday, March 10 and Wednesday, March 11. Both games are set for a 4 p.m. first pitch.

 

PSU returns to Happy Valley on March 13-15 as it hosts Iowa for its Big Ten-opening series. Friday’s contest is set for 5:30 p.m., while Saturday is a 2 p.m. first pitch and Sunday is set for 1 p.m. All games will be streamed on B1G+.
