UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State women’s tennis makes its final road trip of the regular season with matchups at Indiana and Purdue this weekend. 

The Nittany Lions (12-8, 3-6 Big Ten) will face the Hoosiers (13-8, 3-6 Big Ten) at noon on Saturday at the IU Tennis Center before a matchup with the Boilermakers (7-10, 3-6 Big Ten) at 10 a.m. on Sunday at the Schwartz Tennis Center.  

PSU enters the weekend ranked No. 53 in the ITA poll. Penn State, Indiana and Purdue are currently in a three-way tie in the Big Ten standings with the Nittany Lions looking to lock up a spot in the Big Ten Women’s Tennis Tournament. 

 

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT 

  • Penn State dropped two road duals against Iowa and Nebraska last weekend. Both contests were decided by 4-2 margins. 
  • Patricia Grigoras earned two court two singles victories. Against Iowa, the sophomore took down Daianne Hayashida, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3, before besting Nebraska’s Conley Raidt, 6-1, 7-5. Grigoras is on a three-match winning streak in Big Ten singles matches on the top two courts. 
  • Maiko Uchijima won 10 games in a row to pick up a court four singles victory over Iowa’s Emma Tothova, 7-5, 6-0. She now has a singles triumph on four different courts this season. 
  • Maelie Monfils secured her first Big Ten singles win on court one against Nebraska’s Maria Taranova, 6-2, 6-3. 

ACROSS THE NET 

INDIANA 

  • Indiana enters the weekend with a 13-8 (3-6 Big Ten) record. The team has a matchup against No. 3 Ohio State the day after facing Penn State. 
  • The Hoosiers split road matches against Rutgers and Maryland last weekend with IU taking down the Scarlet Knights, 4-2, before falling to the Terrapins, 4-1. Their other Big Ten wins have come over Minnesota and Iowa with the other five losses coming at the hands of Purdue, Wisconsin, Northwestern, Illinois and Nebraska. 
  • Indiana has a ranked doubles tandem in No. 84 Hiiliani Williams and Alessandra Teodosescu. The pairing is 14-5 on court one, 4-4 in Big Ten competition. Teodosescu competed on singles court one against Rutgers and Maryland, dropping both matches, after playing on court two for most of the year. She is 9-7 this spring.  
  • Ameia Sorey is the main court one player, owning a 5-8 (0-7 Big Ten) record at the top spot. 

PURDUE 

  • Purdue is 7-10 (3-6 Big Ten) this spring. The Boilermakers host No. 3 Ohio State the day before the matchup against the Nittany Lions. 
  • The team is coming off a 4-0 sweep over Rutgers. Prior to that, Purdue lost six Big Ten matches in a row to Wisconsin, Illinois, Northwestern, Nebraska, Iowa and Maryland. This six-match slide was preceded by victories against Indiana and Minnesota.  
  • The Boilermakers' Ece Gencer and Ida Clement are ranked No. 55 in the ITA doubles rankings. The pairing is 7-3 this spring with a 5-3 mark in Big Ten play. 
  • Gencer has played on the top singles court all season and boasts a 9-6 (2-5 Big Ten) record this spring. 

SERIES HISTORY 

INDIANA 

  • Indiana holds a 31-11 lead in the all-time series that dates back to 1992. The Blue & White have won four consecutive meetings in the series since 2020. 
  • Last season, Penn State earned a 4-0 sweep over the Hoosiers at the Indoor Tennis Center in Happy Valley.  
  • The last matchup in Bloomington was a 4-1 victory for PSU on March 24, 2024.  

PURDUE 

  • Purdue has a 26-9 advantage in the series since 1992.  
  • The Nittany Lions defeated the Boilermakers 4-0 at the Indoor Tennis Center a season ago for their first win against them since a 5-2 win in Happy Valley on April 21, 2017. 
  • Purdue won the last matchup in West Lafayette by a 4-0 margin on March 23, 2024.
